Baseball Swept by Houghton in Nonconference Doubleheader

HOUGHTON, N.Y.   – Hilbert College Baseball dropped both games of their nonconference doubleheader with Houghton University this afternoon.

The Hawks were held to just two runs and six hits on the day as they fell 7-2 in game one, and 12-0 in game two.

Game 1:

Hilbert got out to a good start in this one, as Billy LoBello doubled and was brought home on a triple by Jack Duffek for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

However, one run in each the second, third, and fourth innings, as well as three runs in the fifth inning gave the Highlanders six unanswered runs after Hilbert opened the scoring.

The Hawks cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth when Jack Duffek sent his first home run of the season over the left field wall for his second RBI of the game.

Houghton answered with a homer of their own in the bottom half of the inning to restore the five-run lead. A 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning from the Hawks offense gave the hosts the 7-2 win in game one.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Duffek provided the offense for Hilbert going 2-3 with 2 RBIs, accounting for two of the team's three hits and driving in all of the team's runs.
  • Billy LoBello produced the only other hit for the Hawks on his first-inning double.
  • All three of the Hawks' hits in the game went for extra bases.

Game 2:

After holding the Hilbert offense scoreless in the top of the first, the Highlanders got the bats going in the bottom of the inning. The hosts scored seven runs on five hits to get out to a commanding lead in game two.

The Hawks got one hit in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but the team was unable to string any offense together to rally back in this one.

Two runs in both the third and fourth innings, as well as a run in the sixth inning for Houghton put the finishing touches on the two game sweep of the Hawks as the Highlanders took game two 12-0.
