Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, PA   – Hilbert College Baseball split a nonconference doubleheader with Waynesburg University this afternoon. With a win and a loss, the Hawks moved to 9-4 on the season.

Hilbert was able to keep the Waynesburg offense quiet in game one thanks to a complete game (seven innings) from Dylan Moorhouse. Four unanswered runs from the Hawks late in the game led to a 4-1 victory.

Waynesburg scored on four of their six trips to the plate in game two to secure the series split. The Yellow Jackets got seven runs on 13 hits in their 7-3 win.

Game 1:

Game one opened up with a pitchers' duel, as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard for the first five innings. Moorhouse scattered three hits in this span, striking out three Yellow Jackets in the process.

After recording just two hits leading up to the sixth inning, the Hawks got a pair of hits in the sixth to break the ice in the game and put three runs on the board. After singling to lead off the inning, Dustin Hendrix came around to score on an error to give Hilbert the game's first run. Griffin McAndrews singled to score Jairo Santos and Jack Duffek to extend the lead to 3-0.

Moorhouse made quick work of Waynesburg in the bottom of the sixth, sending the Yellow Jackets down in order. A Duffek double in the top of the seventh scored Hendrix to make it a 4-0 game heading into Waynesburg's last at bats.

The hosts were able to get one run across to ruin the shutout, but Moorhouse and the defense of the Hawks did not allow the game to get any closer as Hilbert took game one 4-1.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Moorhouse earned his fourth win on the mound, pitching all seven innings, allowing five hits, one unearned run, while striking out five batters.
  • Griffin McAndrews went 2-3 with two RBIs at the plate for the Hawks.
  • Dustin Hendrix scored a pair of runs, while Jack Duffek went 1-3 with a run and an RBI.

Game 2:

After being shut down in game one, the offense of Waynesburg grabbed the game's first two runs after scoring in both the first and second innings.

Hilbert was held off the board in the first two innings, but a single from Jack Duffek that scored Dustin Hendrix cut the lead of the Yellow Jackets to 2-1 in the third inning.

However, Waynesburg answered with three runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Hilbert responded with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth with RBIs from Dustin Hendrix and Patrick Whelan to cut the lead to 5-3.

Two more runs in the bottom of the sixth by the Yellow Jackets made it 7-3 and put the game out of reach.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Dustin Hendrix and Billy LoBello each went 3-4 at the plate.
  • Hendrix, Whelan, and Duffek each recorded an RBI for the only three Hilbert runs of the contest.
  • Hilbert recorded eleven hits in the game, but were unable to match the seven runs of Waynesburg as the Hawks left twelve runners on base.

Up Next:

The Hawks will travel to Houghton for their next two contests. Hilbert will take on the Highlanders in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16. The first game is set to begin at 12 pm, with both games taking place at the Houghton Baseball Stadium.
