GENESEO, N.Y. – Hilbert College Men's Basketball suffered their first defeat in 30 days after they dropped a 77-71 non-conference loss to SUNY Geneseo tonight.
The Hawks had their chances on multiple occasions, but the Knights were deadly at the foul line down the stretch.
Geneseo took a 1-0 lead in the newly created rivalry between the two schools who have never met.
HIGHLIGHTS
Larry Morse collected his sixth double-double this semester when he led all players on the court tonight with a career-high 15 rebound (5 offensive) and scored 15 points (6-of-9 FG).
Quran Briggs was impressive in 34 minutes of action. He connected on 8-of-15 from the floor, hit a pair from beyond the arc and made all four free throws while pulling down five rebounds, and recording Hilbert's solo block for the game.
Shaheem Ellis and Austin Boise added seven points each; Ellis lead the Hawks with three assists and Boies went 2-for-2 in 13 minutes as he works himself back into the fold after recovering from an injury.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hilbert traded hoops with Geneseo the entire first half.
- Luke Rybicki, Quran Briggs, and Sonny Williams all struck from downtown which gave the Hawks a 21-19 advantage with 12 minutes left in the half.
- Briggs kept the Hawks in the game, scoring all eight points over the next 11 minutes. Williams converted a 3-point play with 0:48 on the clock, which finished Hilbert's scoring before intermission.
- Hilbert shot better from the floor (48% to 41%) but they were out rebounded at both ends of the floor as Geneseo built a 3-point window after hitting 9-for-10 at the foul line.
- After spotting the Knights two points early in the second half, Hilbert took a one-point lead at the foul line and when Shaheem Ellis knocked down his first 3-pointer at 16:47, he put Hilbert in front again.
- Austin Boies' 5-point run along with Briggs make from the 3-point line, lifted Hilbert to an 8-point advantage. Geneseo was creeping back into the game but Nathan Moore made all three at the charity stripe which kept the Hawks on top, 58-56 with over eight minutes left.
- Geneseo made a 9-4 run over the next two and a half minutes to take a 64-62 lead with 5:55 on the clock and they never relinquished control.
- Ronnie Lewis knotted the game for the last time at 4:10, but Hilbert put the Knights at the foul line 10 times in the game's final four minutes only to witness the hosts continue their hot hand from 15-feet out for the win.
GAME NOTES
- The Hawks finished the game with their second lowest shooting percentage (.410), their highest turnover number (16), the most fouls whistled against them, while also collecting the fewest steals made by the team this season.
- Geneseo's 28 free throw attempts, and their 13 steals were the highest recorded by an opponent this semester.
- Hilbert finished the game hitting 15-of-19 from the foul line with Briggs, Morse, Moore, Boies and Williams combining for 100% accuracy.
