Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Andrew Loveless

Hawks Special Teams Shine Against Chatham

PITTSBURGH, PA – Hilbert College Women's Hockey traveled to take on future United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponent Chatham University this afternoon in the second ever meeting between the Hawks and the Cougars. Hilbert sandwiched a 1-0 advantage in the second period between a pair of 5-0 periods for Chatham as the hosts skated to a 10-1 victory in game one of the home-and-home between the two squads.

The offense of the hosting Cougars wasted no time once the puck was dropped as they opened up a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Tia Card stood tall in the Hilbert net, making 25 stops in the opening frame as Chatham fired 30 shots on goal. Just two more pucks found the back of the net in the period to give the Cougars a 5-0 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

Hilbert played a much better second period as reflected in both shots on goal and on the scoreboard. Card turned aside all 14 shots sent her way in the frame, while the Hawks got on the board as one of their six attempts found the back of the net.

After working to earn a powerplay opportunity, Hilbert converted with the extra skater through Alexis Cunningham's first career goal. Brooke Kwiecien did well to work the puck to the front of the net where Cunningham was waiting to bury home the chance and make it a 5-1 game heading into the third period.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Chatham replicated their first period scoring output to deny any chance of a comeback as the hosts used five more goals to wrap up the 10-1 non-conference victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Card played all 60 minutes in between the pipes, making 68 saves.
  • Kwiecien added a team-leading five shots on net to her third assist of the campaign.
  • The Hawks blocked 20 shots as a team with Caitlin Conrad (5) and Anna Faulkner (4) leading the way.
  • Hilbert successfully killed off four Chatham powerplays in the contest as Card made eleven stops in 4-on-5 play.
