Women's Basketball Opens Season in Elmira

ELMIRA, NY – Hilbert Women's Basketball opened its season this evening with a non-conference matchup against Elmira College. The Hawks won the third and fourth quarters, but a decisive 27-5 second quarter from the Soaring Eagles led to a 65-45 victory for the hosts.

HIGHLIGHTS

Kelsey Schlagenhauf and Chloe Champagne each scored double figures for the Hawks with twelve and ten points respectively.

Schlagenhauf added a team-high seven rebounds while also making a game-high seven free throws as she went 7/8 from the line.

Champagne did it all for Hilbert, adding a game-high four steals, as well as five rebounds and a pair of assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Elmira took multiple leads in the game's opening quarter, but the Hawks fought back to tie the game at 2-2, 4-4, and 8-8, before the Soaring Eagles would use six straight points to take a 14-10 lead to the second quarter.
  • Elmira shot a scorching 12-17, including 2-3 from deep in the second quarter to stretch their lead to 41-15 at the break. The hosts would end the quarter on a 21-0 run.
  • Schlagenhauf and Champagne did much of their damage when the teams returned to the floor for the second half. The duo combined for 17 of the team's 19 points in the quarter to trim the lead to 54-34.
  • Kylie Morgan started the fourth quarter with back-to-back buckets and Mackenzie Catan and Kayla Johnson each made shots to make it a fifteen point game, but Elmira did enough to hold off a Hilbert comeback, restoring their 20-point advantage for a 65-45 season-opening win.

GAME NOTES

Hilbert held an advantage in fast break points 10-6, but a significant 33-3 bench point differential was key for the Soaring Eagles' victory.

The Hawks were able to get to the line and capitalize from the charity stripe at a much higher rate than Elmira as Hilbert hit on 15 of their 19 free throws, while the hosts made just four of their seven attempts.
