ROCHESTER, NY – Hilbert College Women's Basketball continued non-conference play on the road this evening with a trip to Rochester to take on the Nazareth University Golden Flyers. In a hard-fought game, Hilbert fell to 0-2 on the young season with a 83-32 defeat.
Nazareth took control of the game early, jumping to a commanding 23-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Golden Flyers capitalized on Hilbert's cold shooting, as the Hawks made just 1 of their first 16 attempts from the field (6.25%). Hilbert was able to settle into the game during the second quarter, shooting 40% (4-10) from the floor, but still faced a large deficit at halftime, trailing 44-11.
Kelsey Schlagenhauf led the offense for the Hawks throughout the game, playing all 40 minutes and finishing with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
Mackenzie Catan added 8 points and 3 assists in 36 minutes of play. She also contributed defensively, finishing with 3 steals. Forward
Kylie Morgan added 5 points and 3 rebounds, and sophomore guard
Kayla Johnson provided 6 points in the loss, while
Chloe Champagne chipped in with 11 boards.
While Hilbert struggled with their shooting throughout the game, finishing at just 26.5% (13-49) from the field and 25% (2-8) from three-point range, they fought hard on the glass, grabbing 39 rebounds, just six fewer than Nazareth's 45. The Hawks also generated 11 points off turnovers and showed strong defensive effort at times, particularly in limiting Nazareth's second-chance opportunities.
Nazareth, on the other hand, shot 42.1% (32-76) from the field and had a balanced offensive attack, with five players finishing in double figures. Madalyn Kelly led the way for the Golden Flyers with 17 points, while Payton Littlefield came off the bench to score 16 points, including four three-pointers. Nazareth's fast break game was also a significant factor, as they outscored Hilbert 24-6 in transition.
