Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Women's Basketball hosted their home opener tonight when Hiram College came to town.

The Hawks struggled to find consistency and suffered an 80-38 non-conference loss to the Terriers who improved to 3-3.

HIGHLIGHTS

Kayla Johnson was Hilbert's top performer, leading the team with 11 points and five rebounds. She also went 5-8 from the free-throw line, contributing a significant portion of the team's points.

LaDasia Leak added eight points and seven assists, trying to facilitate the offense, but the team struggled to convert opportunities, and Kelsey Schlagenhauf chipped in seven points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks took an early lead in the opening quarter by attacking the paint while playing with confidence.
  • Hiram extended their man-to-man defense after taking a 5-4 lead, forced the Hawks out of rhythm and stretched their lead in the game before the start of the second quarter to 16-6.
  • The Terriers continued to double the ball on the wings in the second session which created turnovers by Hilbert and uncontested fastbreak scores.
  • Hiram extended their 40-18 half time lead with another 23-point third quarter performance.  Hilbert tossed in 14 points in that same quarter but ran out of gas in the fourth quarter getting outscored 17-4.
GAME NOTES

Hilbert scored 13 points off turnovers but gave the Terriers the ball 29 times which they converted into 45 points.
The Hawks finished the game hitting 29.7% from the field (11-37) and made only 1 of three 3-point attempts along with hitting 15-of-23 at the charity stripe.
Hiram hit 50.8% from the floor, went 11-for-27 beyond the arc and made only 5-of-10 free throws.
