Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Andrew Loveless

Women's Soccer Earns Key AMCC Victory

HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert Women's Soccer hosted Alfred State this afternoon in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest at Hawk Field. The Hawks, led by a gritty team effort, took down the Pioneers 3-2 for their first win of the season.

Vanessa Van Slyke opened the scoring in the game for the Hawks with her fourth goal of the season. After Gabby Calandra did well to hold up play, the ball found its way to Michaela Olson who slid the ball over to a waiting Van Slyke to give Hilbert a 1-0 lead with a perfectly placed shot in the bottom right corner.

Alfred State would answer, however, as the visitors won a penalty just 30 seconds after the Hawks struck first. Ava Bruehwiler stepped up for the Pioneers and tied the game from 12 yards out just under ten minutes into the first half.

Hilbert continued to press as the half continued, firing three shots on the Alfred State net, but Pioneers goalie Kate Sproul was up to the challenge. Equally solid was her counterpart in the Hilbert net, Keira McFarland, who stopped a pair of shots to keep it a 1-1 contest at the break.

Like she did in the first half, Van Slyke put the Hawks in front to begin the second half. The junior midfielder's second goal of the game came off a resilient play in the box to give Hilbert the 2-1 lead. Gabby Calandra's first goal of the season just eight minutes later extended the Hawks' advantage to 3-1. Calandra ripped a shot from right outside the box to open her account for the season.

A second penalty kick tally for the Pioneers in the 85th minute made this one interesting with five minutes to go.

However, the backline of the Hawks remained solid with numerous blocks and interceptions to lock down the 3-2 AMCC win for the team's first of the season.

GAME NOTES
  • Keira McFarland made seven stops for her first win of the season.
  • Van Slyke's second brace of the year powered the Hilbert offense.
  • Calandra recorded her first goal of the season, while Olson tallied her first assist on the year.
