PITTSBURGH, Pa.. – The Hilbert College Women's Basketball team came out of the gates firing on all cylinders in the first quarter this afternoon against La Roche University (7-6), but the Hawks cooled from the floor as the game progressed and suffered an 80-50 AMCC loss to the undefeated Redhawks (6-0 AMCC).
HIGHLIGHTS
Hilbert connected on 4-for-5 from beyond the arc in the opening quarter.
Kelsey Schlagenhauf led the Hawks with 13 points and
Alesia Hamm paired double dimes, scoring 10 points while pulling down 10 rebounds.
Chloe Champagne tossed in a season high 12 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the field and found five rebounds, and
Mackenzie Catan added nine points, hitting three shots from downtown.
Maria Spinelli recorded a team-high two steals and secured six rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Avery Cusack and Mackenzie Catan lifted the Hawks with back-to-back hits from beyond the arc less than two minutes into the game giving Hilbert a 6-0 lead. Both teams traded scores and played through four lead changes; Catan drilled her second three and Champagne connected deep while Schlagenhauf made all four free throws with the Hawks trailing 21-20 after ten minutes of exciting basketball.
- Hilbert scored four unanswered points and pulled within one point (24-25) three and a half minutes into the second quarter. The Redhawks started another mini-run which ended with consecutive three-point makes and sent both teams to the locker room with a 40-32 score.
- The Hawks found themselves in an 18-point deficit just five minutes into the third session and closed the quarter putting only eight points on the score board. Hamm hit three jumpers and Champagne scored a layup in the paint.
- Hilbert tossed in ten points in the fourth quarter through a combination of Belle Oakley (3 pointer), Schlagenhauf (3 points), Hamm (2 points), and Champagne (2) though they had opportunities attempting 14 shots from the floor, their highest number attempted in a quarter of the game.
GAME NOTES
- The Hawks had their best shooting performance of the season, hitting 19-of-47 field goal attempts, but they only made four trips to the foul line, hitting 6-of-8.
- Both teams finished the game with 30 rebounds, though the Redhawks earned 11 offensive which turned into 15 second-chance points.
