ALFRED, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona tacked on eight runs in the final two innings to earn a 14-5 victory over Hilbert College in the 2023 AMCC Baseball Title game.
The Hawks knew it was going to be a battle, having played one additional 9-inning game after working through the loser's bracket yesterday. The pitching staff hung tough and their teammates in the field gave them terrific coverage, but it was two Altoona home runs in the 9th that put the game away and ended the season for the Hawks.
#6 Penn Altoona went 3-0, beating #2 Penn State Behrend on the opening day before taking two from Hilbert on back-to-back days.
#5 Hilbert earned two wins over #1 Alfred State and slipped to the Lions twice in this double elimination tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hilbert, making a very quick change on the mound after the first batter, got out of the first inning down, 2-0.
- After Thomas Evans walked and stole second, Patrick Whelan connected on his 10th home run this season, and second in 18-hours, getting the Hawks right back in the game.
- With their third change on the hump at the start of the 2nd, the Hawks allowed four runs before handing the ball off to another hurler. Zackory Panfil got three quick outs and moved through the next five innings.
- Sebastian Gomez, in the bottom of the 3rd, singled to left and knocked in Whelan, yet with bases loaded, the Lions turned a double play and prevented the Hawks from taking the lead.
- Panfil faced four batters in the 4th, ended the inning with a nice pick-off at 1st base and controlled the Lions at the plate in the 5th.
- Jack Duffek sent one sailing over the fence, scoring John Riviere-Vejas in the 5th to pull the Hawks within one (6-5) but Altoona turned their second double play of the game in the bottom of the 6th just as Hilbert was filling the bags.
- Altoona collected two hits, had two on base, and forced Hilbert to make a change. Blaine Morgan took the ball and got a Lion to hit it high and deep, but John Watson made a great jumping catch at the warning track to secure the third out in the 7th - no damage done in the scoreboard.
- With two outs, Altoona hit a gap-splitting double, scoring two runs for the Lions before Brennen Hediger tossed one pitch and got the Hawks out the 8th.
- A pair of Hawks were stranded in the bottom of the 8th before Hediger closed the game in the 9th.
- Altoona manufactured six runs off two homers which set the final 14-5 margin.
Jairo Santos led with three hits,
Jack Duffek earned two hits and matched
