MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - HIlbert softball continued on today with their trip to Myrtle Beach for the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. Today was their second last day of the trip. They took on two teams from Penn State, Mont Alto and Schuylkill.
The first game of the day was against Penn State Mont ALto, the Hawks struggled in this one and lost by a score of 12-4. The second game of the day though was much closer. The Hawks lost the close one by a score of 6-4.
Game One: Hilbert 4 - Penn State Mont Alto 12
Game Two: Hilbert 4 - Penn State Schuylkill 6
Game One:

Mont Alto started the game swinging out of the gates, managing to score 5 runs in the first inning and holding HIlbert to 0 hits.

They continued on with their strong play in the second inning adding 3 more runs and only allowing 2 of Hilbert's batters on base.

Hilbert scored their first run of the game with Emma Gionta hitting a double to left field and bringing in Makenna Smith. The Hawks managed to keep Mont Alto off of the scoreboard for the first time this game.

Hilbert continued to push back in the fourth inning scoring 2 more runs. Gina Salerno hit a single to right field which brought in Adriana Vara and shortly after Makenna Smith hit a single into center field which brought in Paige Mullen.

The next inning the Hawks scored another run to make it a 5 score game with Morgan Ebert bringing Victoria Hanley home. Unfortunately for the Hawks though Mont Alto would go on to score 3 runs to put them up by 8 in the fifth inning and ended the game.
Game Two:

Brittany McAndrews started and played the whole game at pitcher for the Hawks today.

Both teams started out the game strong defensively allowing only 2 hits each and no one managed to score. This was the same for the second inning as well where there was only 1 hit allowed.

The game began to pick up in the top of the third inning where Hilbert was able to score 3 runs. Victoria Hanley and Emma Gionta made their way to home plate off of a hit by Bailey Budziszewski to left field where they would make an error and allow Hilbert to be the first to get on the board. Brittany McAndrews would step up to the plate next and hit a single which brought in Bailey Budziszewski.

The Hawks began to struggle though in the 4th inning. They were unable to record a hit and then allowed all 6 runs against giving them a 3 run mountain to climb with less than half of the game to go.

Over the next two innings only 3 hits were recorded by both teams combined and heading into the final inning of play Hilbert needed to make a comeback.

In the final inning of play Victoria Hanley hit a fly ball to left field and brought in Mackenzie Catan. Hilbert still needed 2 more runs to tie the game but they would come up just short.

Hilbert only has one more day remaining on their trip to Myrtle Beach. Tomorrow March 10th they will play their final double header. The first game is against Immaculata University at 1:00 PM then Centenary University at 5:00 PM.
