Baseball Dropped by Defenders in Bottom of 9th

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  – The Hilbert Baseball team, playing in their final 9-inning game at the Ripken Experience, suffered a 7-6 walk-off loss to Clark Summit University this morning.

Griffin McAndrews hit his first home run of the season and John Riviere-Vejas added three more stolen bases to his career total.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • John Riviere-Vejas, who earned his time on the base paths off a hit-by-pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball before stealing third. He was knocked home off Patrick Whelan's single to left center at the top of the 1st.
  • Almost in a repeat of his first at bat, Riviere-Vejas walked to first, then stole 2nd and 3rd before Thomas Evans plated him for Hilbert's second run in the top of the 3rd inning.
  • The Defenders responded in the bottom half with back-to-back RBI doubles and evened the score in the book.
  • Griffin McAndrews hit a two-run homer scoring Emmanuel McClain in the process and gave Hilbert a 4-2 lead in the top of the 4th which held the next four innings.
  • With two outs at the top of the 7th, Patrick Whelan connected with a triple and trotted home off Derek Martinez' double to left stretching the score to 5-2.
  • With bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th, the Hawks made a pitch change and worked through the next five batters getting three outs while giving up three runs setting a 5-5 score.
  • Another series of defensive substitutions by Hilbert in the bottom of the 8th led to a quick three-out inning preserving the 5-5 score.
  • Riviere-Vejas singled at the top of the 9th, stole second, advanced to third and Patrick Whelan hit a sacrifice to score the sixth run before the Defenders picked up their bats.
  • Clark Summit tied the game off an unearned run before the Defenders' RBI single gave them the come from behind win.
