MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Hilbert Baseball team concluded the 2023 Ripken Experience on a high note. The Hawks swept Geneva College, 3-2 & 11-4 and improved to 5-6 early in the season.
Junior
John Riviere-Vejas became the Hilbert Baseball All-Time Stolen Base Leader after only 45 career games wearing the royal and white in the nightcap win.
Andrew Cole improved to 2-1 this spring and
Brendan Walsh earned his second save in a pitcher's duel in Game 1.
Brennen Hediger (1-1) and
Josh McTigue shut down the Golden Tornadoes in the nightcap win.
Game 1:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Golden Tornadoes put the first run in the book four batters in, but Hilbert responded in the bottom half of the 1st when Thomas Evans plated John Riviere-Vejas to even the score.
- Geneva added another run in the third inning while the Hawks tacked two runs on in the fourth. Riviere-Vejas' RBI fielder's choice earned one and a balk gave Hilbert the 3-2 lead which held the rest of the 7-inning game.
BY THE NUMBERS:
Game 2:
- The Hawks started the game fast and with purpose. Hilbert's first three base runners were credited with four stolen bases. Ratajczak's RBI single scored John Riviere-Vejas who became the program's All-Time Stolen Base leader after swiping two bases at the start of the game.
- Hilbert continued to challenge the Golden Tornadoes' defense as they forced two more balks and three errors in the second inning, tacking on six more runs. Jairo Santos doubled, John Watson singled, Thomas Evans tripled and Patrick Whelan homered padding the seven run lead.
- Geneva responded by scoring three runs, two of which were collected off Hilbert miscues on defense in the bottom of the 2nd.
- Whelan hit his second double of the day and plated Alex Ellison in the 4th. Then, with bases loaded, Ben Chowaniec entered the game and connected with a big 2RBI single scoring Ratajczak and Evans in the 6th.
- After spotting Geneva one more run, John Watson's RBI groundout stretched the Hawks lead back to seven runs (11-4) and the swept.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Hilbert collected 11 hits, scored 11 runs off 10 RBIs, the best performance of the season.
- Patrick Whelan went 2-for-3, drove in two runs, hit his first home run of the season in addition to a double. John Watson led with 3 RBIs and Jairo Santos finished the game with a double and a triple. Thomas Evans hit a 2RBI double and scored two runs.
- John Riviere-Vejas closed the game scoring two runs along with two stolen bases.
- Brennen Hediger allowed six hits and four runs over six innings, striking out two and walking one. Josh McTigue threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

The Hawks (5-6) return to WNY this weekend. They will travel across the southern tier to Houghton College March 14th for a non-conference double header beginning at 2:00pm.
