ALTOONA, P.A. – Hilbert College's Women's Basketball team travelled today to take on Penn State Altoona in the first round of the AMCC playoffs. Hilbert fought hard all season to make it to their 7
th consecutive post season. The Hawks earned a 54-40 victory in the first round to advance to the semifinals.
HIGHLIGHTS
Mackenzie Catan led the hawks in scoring today with 21 points that came on all 3 point shots. She also earned 7 rebounds in the victory.
Ashley Schroeder and
Chloe Champagne led the Hawks with 5 assists each.
Monika Allen led the team in rebounding today with 10 while
Maria Spinelli was close behind with 9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It took only 16 seconds for the Hawks to record their first points of the game with Ashley Schroeder hitting Mackenzie Catan as she made her first attempt from 3 point range on the night. She would hit another time from 3 just a couple minutes later. Monika Allen made a layup and Ashley Schroeder connected both times from the free throw line which led to the Hawks leading 10-4 at the end of the first quarter.
- Mackenzie Catan stayed hot in the second quarter again hitting from beyond the arc off of an assist from Alesia Hamm. She would go on to hit from 3 point range two more times this quarter as she led the hawks with 15 points. The Hawks biggest leader of the first half of play was a 14 point lead that they gained through strong pressure on the defensive end as well as great shooting. Altoona made a strong push at the end of the quarter to make it a closer game. The Hawks led 26-20 after the first half of play.
- Ashley Schroeder and Chloe Champagne started the scoring off for the Hawks with Schroeder making 2 free throws and Champagne scoring a layup. The Hawks scored the first 9 points of the third quarter to regain their large lead. The Hawks grew their lead to 19 points with an Ashley Schroeder made 3 with a minute left in the quarter.
- Monika Allen started the quarter for the Hawks with a made layup that was followed by Mackenzie Catan's seventh 3 pointer of the game. The Hawks continued to pile on the pressure and points which led to them earning the win and advancing.
GAME NOTES
The Hawks led in almost every statistical category tonight. They had a large lead in rebounding where they had 54 that led to them leading in 2
nd chance points scored. The Hawks shot 15 for 66 while also shooting 8 for 22 from 3 point range and 16 for 24 from the free throw line.
UP NEXT
With the win today the Hawks earned their place in the semifinals. They will take on #1 seed La Roche on Friday night at La Roche. The game will be played at 6:00 and the winner will advance to the championship game.
