Hawks Triumph Over Mt. Aloysius On Senior Day

HAMBURG, N.Y. - The Hilbert College Women's Basketball team earned a 69-45 victory against Mount Aloysius this afternoon in the Hawks final regular season game. 

Prior to the 3:00 pm tip the team and athletic department honored and celebrated the athletic careers of seniors Ashley Schroeder and Grace Zabawa in a Senior Day ceremony with their families at center court.  

The Hawks, who swept the Mounties this season, improved to 10-15, 6-8 AMCC and are now focused on preparing for their First Round AMCC play-off game next week. 

HIGHLIGHTS 

 Ashley Schroeder dominated in the game today scoring 31 points while also earning 5 assists and 6 steals.  Alesia Hamm earned a double-double today with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Schlagenhauf and Chloe Champagne also assisted in the rebounding category finishing with five each and Grace Zabawa, in her final home game of her Hilbert career, earned two points, two assists and four rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Hawks came out of the gate flying today draining shot after shot and playing great defense. Ashley Schroeder, Grace Zabawa and Alesia Hamm all got on the board early and helped Hilbert to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Mt. Aloysius wouldn't score their first points until only 3 minutes left. The Hawks continued to dominate with Chloe Champagne and Monika Allen both going 2 for 2 from the free throw line. They had a big 17-5 lead going into the quick break.
  • However the second quarter did not go their way. The Hawks only managed to score 4 points with a make by Ashley Schroeder and 2 made free throws by Monika Allen and Katie Kociszewski. This dropped their lead to only 21-16 after the first 20 minutes of play.
  • Alesia Hamm came out hot for the start of the third quarter making her first shot attempt from 3 point range. This sparked another strong string of play by the Hawks. The continued to grow their lead with Ashley Schroeder dominating in all facets of the game. The Hawks held an 11 point lead going into the final quarter.
  • Hilbert was unstoppable in the fourth quarter as they scored the first 13 points and eventually grew their lead to 27 points. Ashley Schroeder continued to lead the charge for Hilbert. She managed to get 9 points in the final quarter of play and led the Hawks to the win in the final regular season game.
GAME NOTES 

 The Hawks dominated in the paint tonight earning 46 rebounds, 17 more than Mt. Aloysius. This led them to gaining an 11-0 lead in second chance points. They also managed to do a ton of damage from the free throw line making 16 of 23. The Hawks shot 23 for 60 today and also shot 7 for 21 from 3 point range.

UP NEXT 

The final field is set for the 2023 Women's AMCC Post-Season tournament, and the Hilbert women's program has advanced to the AMCC post-season tournament for the sixth consecutive year.   

No. 3 Pitt-Greensburg will host No. 6 Mount Aloysius and No. 4 Penn State Altoona will host No. 5 Hilbert in a First Round game February 21.  No. 1 La Roche, tournament host, and No. 2 Penn State Behrend have earned First Round byes. 

Semifinal games will take place later in the evening on Friday due to the 2023 Men's Championship weekend also taking place at La Roche.  No. 1 La Roche will face winner of 4/5 at 6:00 pm, and No. 2 Penn State Behrend will battle winner of 3/6 at 8:30 pm. 

The Championship Game is set for Saturday, February 25th at 4:00 pm.
