Women's Basketball Falls in Final Home Game of the Semester

HAMBURG, N.Y.  – The Hilbert College Women's Basketball team pulled within four points late in the fourth quarter, but Carlow University, a first-year AMCC opponent, pulled away for the 61-51 league victory.

HIGHLIGHTS

Kayla Johnson led the Hawks with 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Mackenzie Catan sank 3-of-7 3 pointers to score nine points.

Alesia Hamm and Kelsey Schlagenhauf each reached double digits hitting 12 and 10 respectively.  Schlagenhauf was the only Hawk  to hit 100% at the foul line, finishing 6-for-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carlow opened the game on fire, hitting 3-of-3 shots from downtown to build an 11-1 lead and forced a Hilbert timeout with 3:57 left in the opening quarter.  Catan hit her first 3-pointer coming out of the TO and led the Hawks on an 11-6 run to close the period.
  • Hilbert got right back in the game the second quarter, pulling within one point (24-23) with 2:17 before the break.  Johnson and Hamm led with four points each while the Hawks limited the Celtics from the floor.
  • Carlow pulled away in the third quarter building a double-digit lead just two minutes later which was extended to as many as 16 points with 6:53 on the game clock.
  • Johnson sliced the margin back to single digits off the team's first 3-pointer in the fourth quarter (48-41) and Catan hit her third 3 while Avery Cusack finished a Johnson's offensive rebound into two more points,  cutting the difference back to four points (50-46).  But with every Hilbert run, the Celtics socred, made a stop and scored again, pulling away down the stretch.
GAME NOTES

Every Hawk worked for a stat in the rebound column as Johnson and Maria Spinelli earned a team-high eight rebounds.  Kelsey Schlagenhauf grabbed seven boards and Hamm and Cusack each secured six.
