HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert Men's Basketball improved to 4-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference this evening with a 93-83 win over the Carlow Celtics. The hosting Hawks held the lead for the last 32:45 of the contest in a game that extended their overall win streak to seven games.
HIGHLIGHTS
Quran Briggs started out red hot for Hilbert, scoring 19 of his game-high 28 points in the first half. An efficient shooting night (71% from the floor, 60% from three) led to a season high for the junior guard.
Jahmel Demery (16 points on 80% shooting)
Edward Perez (14 points) and
Shaheem Ellis (11 points) also joined Briggs in double-digits for the Hawks.
The duo of
Justin Poumpey and
Kyreese Fisher controlled the offense all night for Hilbert, combining for 15 assists, with eight and seven, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Briggs and Ellis came out firing for the Hawks, combining to score the first 15 Hilbert points. However, Carlow was keeping up on the other end of the floor, resulting in a 15-15 score after the first seven minutes.
- A Fisher three with 12:45 to go in the half would give the Hawks the lead for good in the game.
- Hilbert extended the lead to 15 points on a Trevon Alexis bucket.
- A game-high eight-point run from Carlow closed the gap down to seven points heading into the second half.
- Hilbert came out of the locker room determined to regain control of the game, scoring the first five points of the half.
- The Celtics tried to claw their way back into the game, but the Hawks had an answer for each of their comeback efforts.
- Carlow brought the game to within one point with less than four to go after a pair of triples, but an immediate 11-1 Hilbert run iced the game.
GAME NOTES
The hustle of the Hawks played a large role in their success on the scoreboard. Leads in both second-chance points (25-13) and points of turnovers (22-15) made all the difference in the ten-point game.
Despite taking the first lead of the game, Carlow only held the advantage for 4:53 in the contest.
UP NEXT
Next up for the Hawks is a non-conference matchup with the Terriers from Hiram College. Hilbert will head to Hiram, Ohio on Friday, December 15th for a 7 PM start. The game will be the last for the Hawks before the winter break.
