Lions Take Down Hawks

ALTOONA, Pa.  – Hilbert College controlled the paint and crashed the boards but went cold from the floor in the final quarter falling in a 61-47 women's basketball final at Penn State Altoona today.

HIGHLIGHTS

Alesia Hamm and Kelsey Schlagenhauf notched a pair of double doubles.  Hamm, earning her second this week, led with 16 points and 13 rebounds while Schlagenhauf recorded the first in her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Avery Cusack reached double digit rebounds after corralling 11 for the game.
Hilbert dominated on the boards, building a 57-38 margin (23 offensive) and altered shots in the paint finishing with a season-best seven blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After matching the Lions offensive efforts early in the opening quarter, the Hawks hit a cold spell and found themselves trailing by nine points halfway through the period.  Hilbert's defense began to test the Lions and the Hawks were successful off the bounce getting the rim for scores as they pulled within one point (11-10) twice after ten minutes.
  • Kelsey Schagenhauf led the royal and white in the second session knocking in six of the team's 12 points.  Hilbert extended possessions by working for eight offensive rebounds in the second quarter but trailed 32-28 at intermission.
  • Altoona outscored Hilbert 18-15 in the third quarter but they built their lead by connecting on four shots beyond the arc.  Hilbert closed the gap to seven points before the start of the fourth quarter.
  • The Hawks, after getting two points from Alesia Hamm's offensive rebound that led to free throws, went cold from the floor and fell behind 59-45 with just over six minutes in the final quarter.  Both teams added only one bucket to the score board in the final minutes of the game.
GAME NOTES
  • Hilbert out-worked the Lions on the offensive glass, earning 23 rebounds but finished with only five makes.
  • Hamm filled the stat sheet again, leading with two blocks, and earned both of Hilbert's steals.
  • Kayla Johnson added eight points and shared team-high honors with Schlagenhauf in assists (3).
  • The Hawks made 10-of-12 at the foul line and limited Altoona's trips, after only committing nine team fouls.
  • Altoona unleashed 22 3-point attempts, hitting only five for the game, but most of them connected in the third quarter when the Lions pulled away.
