NORTH ADAMS, MA – Hilbert Women's Hockey fell in a tightly contested game tonight against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The 3-2 game saw the Hawks and Trailblazers post near identical numbers in shots on goal, faceoff wins, and penalties.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On the first shot of the game, the Trailblazers found the back of the net to jump out to an early 1-0 advantage. Carlen Bertrand's shot found the upper corner of the net to open the scoring less than seven minutes in.
Following the goal Hilbert took six of the game's next seven shots. The Hawks were eventually rewarded for their efforts on net with a goal by
Anna Faulkner. Faulkner's solo effort found herself alone on a breakaway, where she made no mistake in tying the game at one.
Goalie
Tia Card saved five straight trailblazer shots to end the period and keep the game tied.
It did not take long for the hosts to regain their lead once the puck was dropped to begin the second period. Becky Ade found the back of the net just 59 seconds into the middle frame to give her team the 2-1 lead.
Despite a 10-7 shots on goal advantage in the period, the Hawks were unable to even up the score, and went into the locker room still looking for the equalizer.
Just like she had in the first period, Faulkner knotted up the game once again in the third period. Her tally 19 seconds into the frame, assisted by
Kaitlin Cowie, would even up the game at two goals a side.
However, after eight straight saves by Card, the Trailblazers once again jumped out in front. This time it was Bertrand's turn to grab her second of the game. The game's fifth goal, would be its' last, completing the 3-2 final score.
GAME NOTES
- Card made 23 saves in net.
- Faulkner scored the first two goals of her career.
- Brooke Kwiecien led the Hawks with five shots on net.
- With her assist, Cowie extended her season-opening three-game point streak (2G, 2A).
