HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert Men's Basketball came out on top in an entertaining consolation game of the 13th annual Hawks Against Hunger Tip Off Tournament. The Hawks used a 12-point halftime advantage to outlast the visiting Allegheny College Gators 77-63.
HIGHLIGHTS
Junior forward,
Edward Perez, was named to the All-Tournament team for the Hawks after leading all scorers in the game with 21 points. Perez also grabbed eight rebounds, a game-high total he split with
Jahmel Demery. Demery (12 points) was one of four Hawks scoring in double figures.
Eric Jackson (10 points) and
Nathan Moore (12 points) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Hilbert.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hilbert got out to an early 10-0 lead thanks to a pair of buckets from Perez and Jackson
- A trio of layups by the Gator's leading scorer in the tournament. Andre Wilder, (26.5 PPG) closed the gap, but Moore grabbed the momentum right back with a pair of triples.
- With the lead getting as low as six points for the Hawks, buckets from Quran Briggs, Nevada Eldridge, and Justin Poumpey helped Hilbert head into the break up 12.
- Allegheny opened up the half on a 16-3 run to claim their first lead of the game.
- Perez immediately regained the lead for Hilbert with a quick six points.
- After a pair of Wilder free-throws for the Gators to tie the game, Moore's personal five-point run gave the Hawks the lead they would keep until the end.
- The Hawks closed out the win going 7-9 from the line, not allowing Allegheny to find a way back in the game.
GAME NOTES
The defense of Hilbert came up big in this one, recording seven steals and two blocks.
Trevon Alexis led the way with three steals. When it mattered most, the Hawks held Allegheny to just two points in the final five minutes of the contest.
Tyrese Fisher and
Quran Briggs facilitated the offense of Hilbert, combing for 7 of the team's 14 assists. The duo also combined for ten points of their own.
UP NEXT
The team heads to Dods Hall in Fredonia next Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with the Blue Devils. Hilbert will look to stay perfect all-time against Fredonia, as they come into the matchup 4-0 in the series that began in the 2012-13 season. Tip-off is set for 7 PM.
