Hawks Win Late In Altoona

ALTOONA, P.A. – The Hilbert College Women's Basketball team traveled today to Altoona, Pennsylvania to take on their AMCC Rival. The Hawks won this game and improved to 3-5 in AMCC play.

HIGHLIGHTS

Ashley Schroeder led the Hawks with 21 points while also picking up four rebounds and two assists. Maria Spinelli led the Hawks with 12 rebounds, and Mackenzie Catan earned 12 points, all off of 3 point shots.  Belle Oakley and Alesia Hamm each reached double digit points scoring 11 had 10, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belle Oakley started out the scoring for the Hawks by hitting a jumper from deep two point range as they took the first lead of the game.  Altoona took charge of the first quarter and went on an 8-0 run that would eventually be halted by a 3-pointer from Ashley Schroeder. The Hawks could not stop the high powered offense of Altoona which led to them being down after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • After falling behind in the first the Hawks came out hot with Mackenzie Catan hitting from 3, while Alesia Hamm and Belle Oakley both made jump shots of their own to cut the lead down to only 5. Hilbert did well to create turnovers and grab rebounds which led to a made jumper by Ashley Schroeder from outside the paint. Despite their good play they still found themselves down 36-27 at the half.
  • Mackenzie Catan again started the quarter strong hitting a 3 bringing Hilbert within six points of the Lions. She hit from downtown again in the last minute of the quarter and knotted the game at 45.
  • Ashley Schroeder started the fourth quarter hitting a jumper and put the Hawks on top. The final ten minutes were constant back and forth.  Things turned in Hilbert's favor after Alesia Hamm made a layup and  Mackenzie Catan connected from beyond the arc which gave Hilbert a four-point lead with one minute remaining. The Lions had chances to come back and tie the game but Hilbert extended their margin of victory at the foul line.
GAME NOTES

Throughout the game today the Hawks shot 26 for 71 from the floor, including five made three-pointers.
This game was a major back and forth that included 6 lead changes with 5 of them being in the fourth quarter.
