HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College Men's Basketball team earned their third consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win tonight after taking down the Alfred State Pioneers, 92-66.
Hilbert (3-0) built a 24-point lead by intermission but played even with the Pioneers (0-3) the second half to finish with their largest AMCC margin of victory this month.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Hawks built a 50-26 advantage after 20 minutes, thanks in large part to the offensive groove that
Quran Briggs (18 points) and
Edward Perez (14 points) found themselves in. By the final horn, both had collected 20+ points with Briggs hitting 9-of-16 from the floor (25 points) posting his sixth game of the season scoring over twenty. Perez was also on a tear, hitting 50% of his shots, while grabbing four offensive rebounds which led to multiple And 1 scores as he finished with 21 points.
Nevada Eldridge tossed in 16 from the floor sinking 8-of-10 shots in the paint while earning game-high honors in rebounds (8).
Jahmel Demery was active in the lane, making 6-of-7 from the floor and matched Perez' effort on the offensive glass, picking the Pioneers for three offensive rebounds.
Shaheem Ellis quarterbacked the team with seven assists in almost 29 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alfred State jumped out early but never built a large lead as they traded hoops with the Hawks for the first three minutes.
- After the Pioneers took a 9-4 lead, hitting their first 3-pointer in the game, the Hawks went on a 22-3 run to put the game away early.
- Hilbert ran the floor for scores and shared the ball well while Alfred State didn't attack the rim with purpose and struggled to create room for open looks through to half time.
- Wendell Abellard's two makes at the foul line finished the run created by Briggs, Perez and Eldridge and gave Hilbert a 26-12 advantage with ten minutes left in the first half.
- Briggs hit back-to-back shots from downtown before Ellis stroked one from deep and gave the Hawks a 40-17 lead.
- Perez and Demery scored in the lane and Perez finished the half with a pair of three-point plays which set the 50-26 score.
- Alfred State turned up the burners and went on a 10-4 run at the start of the second half and forced a Hilbert timeout just 2.5 minutes in.
- The Pioneers Isaiah Kostyal put the Pioneers on his back and scored 11 points in the run which inched A-State to within 12 points (61-49).
- The Hawks pulled back together and closed the game with a 29-17 run for the win.
