KENMORE, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team earned a big AMCC victory over conference foe La Roche University by way of the long ball, belting a trio of home runs to score a commanding 11-2 win in game two of today's doubleheader.
Final Scores:
Game 1: La Roche 5, Hilbert 1
Game 2: Hilbert 11, La Roche 2
Records: Hilbert 12-12, La Roche 7-11
Game One:
* La Roche got on the board first in game one when Anthony Cioffi sent a 3-run blast to left to take an early 3-0 lead.
* Redhawks starter Zach Oddi pitched well with the lead, blanking the Hawks over the first three innings to maintain a three run lead into the fourth.
* In the bottom of the fourth, Patrick Whelan laced a double down the right field line. Samuel Mullen followed with a single. Then Whelan later scored off a botched throwback from the catcher to the pitcher to cut the deficit to two.
* That was all the Hawks offense would muster up, as La Roche starter Oddi would blank the Hawks over the next two innings and reliever Shane Murphy would put up a scoreless seventh to secure the game one win.
* Hilbert starter Brendan Walsh took the loss on the mound after giving up three runs over four innings of work.
* Six Hawks would record hits in the contest. Thomas Evans and Patrick Whelan each recorded a double and catcher Samuel Mullen added a single and a pair of walks to lead the offense.
Game Two:
* The Hawks were able to strike first in game two. Starter Michael Contini set down the Redhawk hitters in order in the top of the first. Then, John Riviere-Vejas led-off the bottom of the first with an infield single before Thomas Evans would send a laser to left center for a 2-run bomb to give the Hawks an early 2-0 advantage.
* After Contini blanked La Roche for two more frames, Hilbert would add another run off an Angelo DiNizo RBI double to take a 3-0 lead through three innings.
* The Redhawks cut into the deficit in the fourth by plating one, but Hilbert would respond in the fifth with another run off an RBI single from DiNizo to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead after five.
* The Hawks turned to the bullpen to start the sixth. William Hudson made his second appearance on the mound. Hudson loaded the bases after hitting a trio of batters before turning it over to Griffin McAndrews. McAndrews would get out of the jam to keep the Hawks ahead 4-2.
* From there, the Hilbert offense turned it on, scoring seven runs over their final two ups, including back-to-back home runs from Patrick Whelan and Samuel Mullen to earn an impressive 11-2 win.
* Five Hawks recorded multi-hit games including John Riviere-Vejas, Thomas Evans, Samuel Mullen, Angelo DiNizo and Jonathan Wilson. Evans, Mullen and Whelan each belted home runs, and Riviere-Vejas (2) and Evans (3) each recorded multi-stolen base games.
* Michael Contini picked up his AMCC-leading fourth win of the season after going five innings of three hit ball, while striking out five Redhawks.
