Baseball Splits With Top Seeded Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. - The Hawks hit the road to play a doubleheader at Alfred State for the AMCC Games of the Week. Hilbert won big in game one 13-7 and led late in game two before dropping a close one 4-3.

Final Scores:

Game 1: Hilbert 13, Alfred State 7
Game 2: Alfred State 4, Hilbert 3

Records: Hilbert 13-13 (5-3), Alfred State 15-16 (9-1)

Game One:

* Alfred State touched up Hawks starter Brendan Walsh early to build a 5-2 lead through two innings.
* The Hawks answered quickly in the top of the third inning by way of two big flies. Samuel Mullen sent a two-run shot to deep left early in the inning and Thomas Evans hit a grand slam to deep left later on resulting in an eight run frame for the royal and white.
* Hilbert then turned to the bullpen to hold the lead. Zackory Panfil and Griffin McAndrews delivered, combining for 5.1 innings of two run ball to slam the door shut.
* The Hawks added three insurance runs late via an Angelo DiNizo solo shot and a 2-RBI double from Santino Turello to finish the scoring, resulting in a 13-7 win.
* Zackory Panfil picked up his first win of the season after 2.1 solid innings of relief. Griffin McAndrews recorded his third save in conference play after tossing three shutout innings to close out the game.
* Thomas Evans, Samuel Mullen and Misael Guzman Caez each recorded multi-hit games to lead the offense.

Game Two:

* The second game was a pitchers duel throughout as starter Michael Contini went pitch to pitch with the Pioneers starter.
* Hilbert got on the board first in game two when designated hitter Patrick Whelan hit a line drive down the right field line to drive in John Riviere Vejas from first to put the Hawks up 1-0 early.
* Contini responded with a pair of scoreless frames to maintain the Hawks lead heading into the third.
* The Pioneers were able to scratch one across in the third by way of a pair of bunts after the leadoff runner reached by error to knot things up at one a piece and scored one more in the fourth off a walk and hit to take the 2-1 lead through four.
* The Hawks plated two in the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Pios defense, but the Alfred State offense answered with two in the bottom of the frame off a double and home run to go ahead 4-3.
* Hilbert wouldn't go down without a fight. With two outs in the final frame, John Riviere Vejas ripped a single to centerfield. Evans followed with a single and Patrick Whelan was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the Alfred State reliever was able to stop the rally with a groundout to end the shortened game 4-3.
* Michael Contini (4-2) took the loss on the mound after allowing just three earned runs over five innings of work. Blaine Morgan added a scoreless sixth in relief.
* John Riviere Vejas and Thomas Evans recorded multi-hit games to lead the offense.

Up Next:

* Hilbert goes into the Easter weekend sitting 5-3 in conference play and has a date with Penn State Behrend coming up on Wednesday afternoon at 1pm.
