Baseball Splits AMCC Games Of The Week With Mounties

GOWANDA, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team took the field this afternoon against Mount Aloysius to kickoff AMCC conference play. The Hawks dropped a close one in game one, but bounced back for a convincing 9-2 win over the Mounties in the night cap.

Final Scores:

Game 1: Mount Aloysius 3, Hilbert 1
Game 2: Hilbert 9, Mount Aloysius 2

Records: Hilbert 9-11, Mount Aloysius 12-6

Game One:

* It was a good old fashioned pitchers duel in game one as starters Michael Contini and Dylan Coyle both went the distance in this low scoring affair.
* The Mounties scored the first run of the game in the third inning off of a safety squeeze and tacked on two more unearned runs in the fourth off of an error and a pair of hits to take a 3-0 lead.
* Hilbert answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth when Angelo DiNizo hit a sac fly to left field to plate Thomas Evans, cutting into the deficit.
* Both pitchers locked in from there, combining for 16 consecutive outs without a runner reaching base before Angelo DiNizo sent a single to center field to breakup the streak in the seventh.
* Coyle was able to work around a pair of hits from DiNizo and James DiSanti in the final frame to secure the 3-1 win.
* Michael Contini took his first loss of the season on the mound. The southpaw tossed a complete game six-hitter and allowed just one earned run while striking out three Mounties.
* The Hawks recorded just three hits in the contest, coming from DiNizo, DiSanti and Thomas Evans.

Game Two:

* The second game of the doubleheader began similiarly to the first, as starting pitchers Blaine Morgan and Creek Miller got off to strong starts, blanking the offenses in the first.
* Mount Aloysius was able to scratch across a run in the top of the second off of a James Rice RBI double to take an early 1-0 lead.
* The score remained 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth when the Hawks offense erupted for six runs off five hits and four walks. John Riviere-Vejas, Angelo DiNizo and Patrick Whelan each recorded RBI singles in the fourth to give the hosts a commanding 6-1 lead through four.
* That would be all the Hilbert pitchers would need as starter Blaine Morgan allowed just two runs off six hits over six innings of work before handing it over to the bullpen.
* Samuel Mullen provided an insurance run in the seventh when he sent a solo shot to left for his first home run of the season and the Hawks would tack on two more in the eighth.
* Meanwhile, reliever Griffin McAndrews closed out the final three innings in shutout fashion, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out three to pickup his first career save.
* Samuel Mullen had a breakout performance at the dish going 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and a home run to lead the Hawks offensive attack. Meanwhile, designated hitter Patrick Whelan went 4 for 4 with a double, walk, RBI and run scored.

Up Next:

* Hilbert will rest up before hitting the road to play Pitt-Bradford in an AMCC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6th. First pitch is slated for 1pm.
