McAndrews Lifts Hawks To Sweep On Senior Day

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team celebrated their seven graduating seniors this afternoon in a doubleheader at Medaille College. Griffin McAndrews was the spark in both games that lifted the Hawks to a big AMCC sweep to put them in a strong position as they head towards postseason play.

Final Scores:

Game 1: Hilbert 5, Medaille 1
Game 2: Hilbert 5, Medaille 4

Records: Hilbert 16-16 (8-6), Medaille 1-18 (0-10)

Game One:

* Hilbert was electric from the jump as they scored in each of the first two innings to build a solid lead. John Riviere Vejas swiped two bags in the first and scored on a Thomas Evans RBI single. Then in the second, the Hawks had two runners reach via hit by pitch before Santino Turello smacked an RBI double. Jairo Santos and John Riviere Vejas followed with RBI ground outs to put the Hawks up 4-0 through two innings of play.
* The Hawks turned to Griffin McAndrews on the mound in the third. The 4-0 lead was all he'd need as he cruised the final five innings allowing just one unearned run over two hits and struck out three to secure his second win of the season.
* Hilbert added an insurance run late when Misael Guzman Caez scored after reaching via walk and stealing second base to conclude the scoring for the game.
* Patrick Whelan and Santino Turello each hit doubles and John Riviere Vejas added two stolen bases to lead the offense.

Game Two:

* The Hawks started a bit slower in game two and leaned heavily on their arms to keep the game within reach.
* Hilbert was able to scratch one across in the first inning when John Riviere Vejas scored on a Patrick Whelan RBI single after leading off with a single of his own.
* Senior Jordan Brown got his first start of the season in game two and answered the bill going 2.1 shutout innings to keep the Hawks leading 1-0 early.
* Camerin Holmes came in to relieve Brown and blanked the Medaille offense over the next 1.2 innings to go into the fifth with the Hawks leading 1-0 still.
* In the fifth, Medaille led off with a double and later scored to tie things up at one.
* After a scoreless sixth from both sides, Medaille would tack on two more in the seventh to chase Holmes from the game.
* Zackory Panfil would relieve Holmes and get right to work, ending the inning to limit the damage.
* The Hawks trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh and played with a sense of urgency. After plating one, the Hawks had second and third with two outs and on came Griffin McAndrews to pinch hit. He delivered with a 2-RBI go-ahead single up the middle to help the Hawks regain the lead, sparking a 4-run inning to give the royal and white a 5-3 advantage heading into the eighth.
* Zackory Panfil would slam the door from there, allowing just one unearned run over 2.1 innings pitched and added three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.
* Griffin McAndrews came up with the clutch hit, while John Riviere Vejas led the offense with three hits, including a pair of doubles and a stolen base.

Up Next:

* The Hawks head to Pitt-Greensburg later this week to conclude their AMCC regular season schedule with a Friday afternoon doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
