Contini Shines As Hawks Drop A Pair To Behrend

Erie, Pa. - Hilbert ace Michael Contini continued his strong play with yet another quality start, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks dropped a pair of games to the Penn State Behrend Lions this afternoon.

Final Scores:

Game 1: Penn State Behrend 17, Hilbert 2
Game 2: Penn State Behrend 10, Hilbert 0

Records: Hilbert 13-15 (5-5), Penn State Behrend 17-9 (10-2)

Game One:

* Hilbert got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. John Riviere Vejas led off with a double and later scored on a Patrick Whelan sac fly to take an early 1-0 lead.
* Behrend responded with seven runs in the top of the second inning to chase starter Camerin Holmes from the game early.
* The Hawks scratched another run across in the bottom of the second when Jonathan Wilson ledoff with a walk and later scored off a ground ball from Jairo Santos to cut the lead to 7-2.
* It was all Behrend the rest of the way as they would plate ten unanswered runs to cap off a commanding 17-2 win.
* Camerin Holmes (2-2) took the loss on the mound after going 1.1 innings.
* John Riviere Vejas and Thomas Evans both hit doubles to lead the offense.

Game Two:

* The second game of the doubleheader was a true pitchers duel. Hilbert ace Michael Contini was dominant again on the mound while Penn State Behrend starter Jeff Zick was equally as impressive.
* The Lions got the scoring started with a pair of unearned runs off two Hawks errors in the second inning and tacked on one more in the third to take a 3-0 lead after three frames.
* Both Contini and Zick blanked the offenses over the next three innings to keep the score at 3-0 heading into the seventh.
* The Hawks would turn to the pen in the seventh and the Behrend offense took advantage, scoring seven runs over the final three innings to finish off the day with a 10-0 win.
Michael Contini (4-3) went six innings scattering three hits and allowing only one earned run while striking out five in the loss. Griffin McAndrews added 1.1 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.
* Thomas Evans continued his strong play with a 2 for 4 effort at the plate and added a stolen base.

Up Next:

* The Hawks hit the road this weekend as they head to Penn State Altoona for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
