Evans, Contini Lift Hawks To Sweep Over Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team came away with a pair of hard fought wins at Houghton College on Saturday afternoon.

Final Scores:

Game 1: Hilbert 12, Houghton 6
Game 2: Hilbert 6, Houghton 2

Records: Hilbert 8-10, Houghton 7-11

Game One:

* The Hawks got on the board first as they scratched across a run in the top of the first by way of a leadoff walk from John Riviere-Vejas, whom later came around to score on an RBI groundout from James DiSanti
* Houghton quickly responded with a pair of runs off of Hilbert starter Camerin Holmes to take the early 2-1 lead.
* Both starters blanked the opposition over the next two frames before the Hawks tied it up in the fourth. Misael Guzman Caez reached on an infield single, stole second and later came around to score.
* Hilbert tacked on another in the fifth as Riviere-Vejas scored another run on an RBI single from Santino Turello to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead.
* After a quick 1-2-3 from Holmes, the Hawks offense went back to work, scoring two more in the sixth off of a Jon Wilson RBI double to left center, followed by a Griffin McAndrews RBI single to center.
* The Highlanders showed signs of threat in the sixth, but reliever Brendan Walsh was able to slam the door to preserve the 5-3 lead.
* The Hawks offense then exploded for seven runs in the seventh, sparked by four doubles in the inning, courtesy of Thomas Evans, Misael Guzman Caez, Jonathan Wilson and Santino Turello to cement a 12-6 Hilbert win.
* Camerin Holmes picked up his second win of the season after tossing five strong innings. Brendan Walsh got the final six outs to pickup the save.
* Santino Turello had a big day at the plate going 3 for 5 with a double, stolen base and three RBI. Jonathan Wilson had a strong day as well, adding a pair of doubles, runs scored and RBI.

Game Two:

* The Hawks started game two in similar fashion, scoring another run in the early going, this time by way of a Thomas Evans RBI single to center to plate Santino Turello
* Houghton responded immediately with a pair of runs over the first three innings to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth.
* In the fourth, Hilbert took advantage of a throwing error by the Houghton shortstop with a pair of hits from Misael Guzman Caez and Emmanuel McClain to plate a pair of runs and retake the lead 3-2.
* That proved to be more than enough as starter Michael Contini blanked the Highlanders over the final four innings to lift the Hawks to a 6-2 victory.
* Contini tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and struck out three to improve to 3-0 on the season.
* Thomas Evans led the offensive attack with a huge 4 for 4 performance, including a double, two stolen bases, two RBI and a run scored. John Riviere-Vejas and Misael Guzman Caez logged multi-hit games as well.

Up Next:

* Hilbert is back in action next Saturday as they play host to Mount Aloysius College to kickoff AMCC conference play. The doubleheader marks the first games ever played at the FSSJ Athletic Complex. First pitch is set for 1pm.
