Baseball Drops A Pair To Cairn

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Hilbert College baseball team was swept in its doubleheader against Cairn University on Friday afternoon at The Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach.

Final Scores:

Game 1: Bethany 14, Hilbert 7
Game 2: Bethany 11, Hilbert 3

Records: Cairn 6-3, Hilbert 3-8

Game One:

* Kevin Luna got the start for the Hawks and struggled to find the zone early, as he surrendered four walks and three hits before being pulled with no outs in the second.
* The Highlanders capitalized on the early struggles from the Hawks by plating 10 runners to take an early 10-0 lead going into the bottom of the third.
* The Hawks responded immediately with a strong bottom of the third, scoring six runs off hits by Jonathan Wilson, Patrick Whelan and Frank McCabe, three walks and a pair of errors by the Cairn defense to score six runs.
* Coach Fittry then turned to Joseph Cobb to keep the Hawks in it. Cobb responded, tossing 2.1 perfect innings and added a strikeout.
* Cairn tacked on four runs late off a grand slam in the seventh which sealed the 14-7 win.
* Patrick Whelan had a mult-hit game for the Hawks going 2 for 2 with a walk and a pair of runs scored.

Game Two:

* Brendan Walsh took the mound for his second start of the season in game two.
* It was a pitchers duel in the early going as Cairn plated a run off of a couple of defensive miscues, but Walsh kept the Highlander sticks off balance, resulting in a 1-0 ballgame heading into the fourth.
* Hilbert took the lead in the top of the fourth off of a Brandon Job RBI double and later scored when Thomas Evans stole second on a first and third play to put the Hawks up 2-1.
* Cairn answered immediately with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 7-3 lead and later tacked on four more to cap off the 11-3 win.
* Patrick Whelan had another big game offensively, going 2 for 2 with a pair of hit by pitches, a stolen base and a run scored. Benjamin Ratajczak also had a mult-hit game in his first start of the season.

Up Next:

* Hilbert closes out their spring break trip tomorrow morning at 9am as they take on Delaware Valley in a single 9-inning game.
