HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Women's Basketball team started the game behind early and was then forced to play catch-up in their season opener against Oswego State tonight in front of a full house in the Hafner Recreation Center.
The Hawks (0-1) showed they are capable of building momentum, but they suffered a 78-63 loss to the Lakers (1-0).
HIGHLIGHTS
Ashley Schroeder led all scorers with 22 points while dishing four assists.
Macy Kisner earned her first double-double of the year, combining 14 points with 12 rebounds, and
Alesia Hamm added 13 points while doing what she is known to do – grab offensive rebounds. Hamm was one rebound shy of a double-double after she battled to nine offensive rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lakers took a 23-9 lead after the first ten minutes of action mainly due to their work on the offensive glass where they outworked the Hawks for 10 offensive rebounds.
- The Hawks, down by 15 with just under six minutes left in the second quarter, went on a 17-8 run and pulled within five points, twice, and headed to half time trailing, 35-30.
- Hilbert did a much better job on the boards, limiting the Lakers to just six offensive rebounds while they crashed for 16, which led to multiple second-chance attempts for the Hawks.
- Chloe Champagne drilled her second 3-pointer of the game less than two minutes into the third quarter and inched the Hawks to a three-point deficit (37-34). The Lakers ran the floor for scores and stretched their lead back to double digits (57-44) by the start of the final session.
- Hilbert committed two turnovers and three quick fouls in early possessions of the fourth quarter and fell into an 18-point hole. The Hawks climbed on Schroeder and Hamm's offensive effort to trim the margin to 11, but the Lakers held on for the win.
GAME NOTES
- The Hawks gave up 25 offensive rebounds as they trailed the Lakers on the glass (55-42) and made 50% of their free throw attempts, hitting only 14-of-28.
- Hilbert finished the game connecting on 33.3-percent of their field goal attempts and made only three of 14 shots from downtown.
- Oswego State shot the ball at a 40.0% clip from the field, and 72.7% from the charity stripe (16-22).
UP NEXT
Hilbert returns to the Hafner next Tuesday, November 15 when they host Fredonia (7:30 pm) in a non-conference double header with the men's team.
