Hawks Lose Close Home Game

HAMBURG, NY - The Hilbert College Women's Basketball team took on Fredonia State today in their second home game of the season. It was a tight game from start to finish with multiple lead changes. Overall in the end after multiple turnovers by the Hawks the Fredonia Blue Devils prevailed with a 58-54 victory.

HIGHT LIGHTS

Ashley Schroeder posted her first double-double of the season pairing 20 points with 10 rebounds, while Macy Kisner tacked her second D-D to her final season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Alesia Hamm added eight points and rebounds as she and Kisner grabbed 10 of the Hawks' 18 offensive rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The action in the first ten minutes was an extremely balanced between the two teams.  Belle Oakley connected with a 3-pointer and Ashley Schroeder added early back-to-back lay-ups.  In addition, Hilbert earned multiple possessions thanks to the official's calling offensive fouls, and illegal screens on the Blue Devils as the period progressed yet Fredonia State took a 15-14 lead by the start of the second quarter.
  • The Hawks managed to outscore their opponents 11-8 during the second period. Both teams struggled to hold onto the ball with a total of 17 turnovers whistled in ten minutes.  Schroeder and  Kelsey Schlagenhauf led the scoring charge and lifted the Hawks to a 25-23 lead at intermission.
  • Fredonia ultimately won the game in the third quarter when they out scored the Hawks 20-14. Schroeder took over with six quick points before Alesia Hamm struck from downtown in front of the Hawks' bench, setting a 34-35 score.  Hamm added two more points in the paint and Macy Kisner converted a three-point play to end the scoring with Hilbert trailing 43-39.
  • Hamm inched the Hawks back to a two point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter but a series of empty trips on offense, Hilbert found themselves in a five point hole (51-46) with just five minutes left in the game.  Kisner's bucket and then quick steal at half court led to an uncontested layup putting Hilbert back in a one-point game (50-51).  Schroeder went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe and finished on offensive rebound with a put-back score.  But Fredonia State went 3-for-4 at the foul line to pull out the 58-54 win.
GAME NOTES
  • Both teams were plagued by 44 turnovers.  The Blue Devils were called for a handful of offensive charging fouls and illegal screens while the Hawks didn't execute in offense or traveled with the ball.   Fredonia collected 14 steals to Hilbert's five.
  • Hilbert won the battle on the boards, building a 50-41 advantage and secured 18 offensive rebounds which they converted into 11 second chance points.
