Hawks Clash Against UAA Spartans In Post Holiday Break Competition

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team fought tenaciously but was unable to last past the first quarter against non-AMCC foe, Case Western Reserve, losing 86-47 at the Hafner Recreation Center this afternoon.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Case Western Reserve 86   I  Hilbert 47
  • Location: Hafner Recreation Center  I Hamburg, NY
  • Records:   Spartans 5-6  I  Hawks 1-12

HIGHLIGHTS

Two Hilbert Hawks hit double digits in points - Macy Kisner, playing a total 37 minutes, had 12 total points with one assist, and Ashley Schroeder, also playing a total of 37 minutes, had a team high 16 points with two assists. Mackenzie Catan had a career high in minutes - playing 38, as well as a career high in points scored in a game with seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hawks started the scoring off in the first 20 seconds with a layup by Macy Kisner, and an assist by Mackenzie Catan. This would be the first and only lead by the Hawks in the game.
  • Ashley Schroeder kept the energy alive hitting a fast break layup and getting fouled to the ground. Schroeder hit both of her free throws to bring the score to 14-8.
  • Grace Zabawa was able to see some action as well in the first quarter, using her fast hands to steal the ball and grab a fast break layup in the paint.
  • The second quarter was rough for the Hawks as they were only able to get six total points on the board - five from Ashley Schroeder and a point off a made free throw from Grace Zabawa
  • Going into halftime, Case Western Reserve had a 33 point lead with 56-23.
  • The last half was more even than the first half with the Spartans scoring 30 total points and the Hawks scoring 24 total points. However it wasn't enough to dig out of the 33 point deficit accrued in the first half.
  • Mackenzie Catan and Macy Kisner played with heart in the third and fourth quarter, racking up their rebounds stats. Catan had all five of her rebounds (two offensive boards, three defensive rebounds), while Kisner secured six out of her seven total rebounds (four offensive boards, two defensive rebounds) of the game in the second half.
  • The Hawks were able to push the ball effectively in the backcourt versus the Spartans press, but came up short in the front court with 25 total turnovers resulting in 33 points for Case Western Reserve.
  • Case Western Reserve had its largest lead of 47 with 6:46 left in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks fought back hard to bring that deficit to 39 to close out the game.

GAME NOTES

Ashley Schroeder continues her scoring ways, scoring 16 points and shooting at 71%, despite being in foul trouble in the first half of the game. Macy Kisner also ended the game with three personal fouls, but was still able to chip in three steals and her mostly fast break layups adding 12 points and 1 assist. Hilbert shot only 30.2% from the floor, and went 2-9 on three point field goal attempts. In the 12 times that the Spartans put the Hawks at the line, only 13 points were made for a game percentage of 54.2%.

The Hawks earned a total 31 rebounds and committed 25 damaging turnovers.

Case Western Reserve shot 47% from the field, made 40% of their 3-point attempts, and went 93.3% (14-15) from the line. The Spartans also out rebounded the Hawks 47-31 and also turned the ball over 21 times.
