Women's Basketball Wins Third In A Row After Beating Altoona

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team picked up their third consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win today after they defeated Penn St.-Altoona 62-51 in a rescheduled game from a week ago.

The Hawks won three of four quarters and put the game away down the stretch.  They moved into sixth place in the league, even though they've won more games than a few teams above them in the standings who haven't played as many games.

  • Location: Alder Complex  I Altoona, Pa.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Ashley Schroeder filled the stat sheet with 19 points (7-for-12 from the field), seven assists, seven rebounds, two steals in a full 40-minute performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Altoona opened the game with a deep shot less than 60-seconds into the game.
  • The Hawks responded with two scores in the paint, one off an Schroeder three-point play.
  • Both teams traded baskets through four lead-changes ending with Kisner making both free throws with just under two minutes before the horn.
  • Hamm drilled a three-pointer with two-seconds left to give Hilbert a 14-10 advantage at the start of the second quarter.
  • Schroeder picked the Lions twice early and feed Kisner in the paint for four quick points at the start of the second.
  • Hamm, Catan (3-pointer) and Schroeder (four points) pushed the Hawks to the locker room with a 27-20 lead.
  • Kerner scored the first bucket after intermission and Schroeder's fast break layup lifted the Hawks by 11 points with 8:41 remaining.
  • The Lions inched back slicing the margin to five points three times before the start of the final period so when Schroeder earned another "And I" at start of the fourth, the Hawks maintained control.
  • Catan extended her team's lead back to nine (50-41) at 6:27 but two empty trips offensively and defensive fouls opened the window for the Altoona to pull within one (50-49) just 90-seconds later.
  • Kerner finished a three-point play, Catan posted an open jumper and Schroeder went 1-for-2 at the foul line as Hilbert shifted the momentum back in their favor.
  • Kisner found room the lane for two more, Catan hit from inside the arc this time and Kisner's two free throws set the final 11-point win.

GAME NOTES

  • Hilbert outplayed the Lions in the second two quarters, shooting 60-percent in the third and 55-percent in the fourth.
  • The Hawks defensive pressure was too much for Altoona as they forced the Lions into 24 turnovers and a 32-percent effort from the floor.
  • Hilbert was credited with 15 steals, attempted 22 free throws and committed only nine team fouls which results in Altoona scoring only five points from the charity stripe.
  • The royal and white outscored the Lions 32-16 in points in the paint and 14-4 in fast break points.
