HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College softball team has advanced to the 2021 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Post-Season Tournament.
The No. 9 Hawks (1-15) will travel to Alfred, N.Y. for their play-in, best-of-3 series against No. 8 Alfred State College (3-13) this Thursday, May 6th.
Hilbert opened their season March 20th against Division II D'Youville in what was their first time doing anything on a softball diamond rather than inside a building.
The Hawks then waited 34 days before they competed again due to Covid protocols and practice/game competition pauses.
In order to schedule all eight AMCC opponents, Hilbert scheduled two, 3-day weekend series with only one day off in between a back-to-back series mid-week. What all that means is the 1-17 Hawks played eight double headers in a 10-day period that ended May 2.
A week ago, Hilbert hosted the Pioneers from Alfred State (5-19) at Gowanda High School and dropped both games (8-4 and 13-12). The Hawks were making a hard come-back in the night cap after driving in four runs in the bottom of the 7th.
The winner of the 8/9 game Thursday will travel to Erie, Pa Sunday, May 9 to play No. 1 Penn State Behrend (14-2). Other games being played that day are No. 2 Pitt-Bradford v No. 7 La Roche, No. 3 Mt. Aloysius v No. 6 Pitt-Greensburg and No. 4 Medaille v No. 5 Penn State Altoona.
The four winners of the May 9th games will advance to a May 12th date of competition and the AMCC softball champion will be determined Saturday, May 15.
