ALTOONA, Pa. - The Hilbert College baseball team came back from their 10-day pause this afternoon when they traveled to Penn State Altoona for an AMCC twin bill. Sophomore
Misael Guzman Caez had a stellar day tallying a pair of multi-hit games and tossing six strong innings, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell 11-0 and 14-5.
GAME ONE
The Lions were first to strike in the bottom of the first off starter
Josh McTigue, as a Grayson McClain leadoff double sparked a 2-run inning to take an early lead on the visiting Hawks.
Penn State Altoona starter Tyler Manger kept the Hawks off the board through the first three innings to allow the offense to extend the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third off a Jake Hillard 3-run home run.
The Hawks would strike back in the top of the fourth.
Misael Guzman Caez led off with a single and stole second base. He then advanced to third on an obstruction call and later scored off of a
James DiSanti sac fly to put Hilbert on the board.
After that it was all Lions as they tacked on six unanswered runs to cruise to an 11-0 victory.
Josh McTigue took the loss on the mound after giving up five runs on six hits over three innings of work.
Misael Guzman Caez and
Jared Welnowski led the offense with a pair of hits each.
GAME TWO
Game Two had a much different feel from game one. It was a pitchers duel early as Hawks starter
Misael Guzman Caez and Lions starter Hunter Johnson kept the game scoreless through three innings.Â
In the top of the fourth,
Frank McCabe led off with a single and stole second base. Then, Guzman Caez single to left and stole second base after to bring up
Colton Davis two batters later. Davis laced a 2-RBI single to centerfield to put the Hawks up 2-0. Guzman Caez responded with a scoreless fourth inning.Â
The Hawks offense tacked on another run in the fifth after back to back doubles by
Misael Guzman Caez and
James DiSanti to give the Hawks a 4-1Â lead.Â
The Lions responded with a pair of runs in the sixth to cut into the lead, but
Brandon Job responded immediately with a solo blast to right to keep the Hawks up by two at 5-3.
From there, Hilbert would turn to the bullpen and Penn State Altoona would take full advantage, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the seventh to cruise to a commanding 14-5 win.
Misael Guzman Caez was given a no-decision after tossing six strong innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven Lions hitters. He also led the charge offensively, logging another pair of hits, including a double, and stole his second base of the day.
Brendan Walsh took his first career loss out of the pen.
The Hawks have a short turnaround as they head to Alfred State in the morning to conclude their regular season. Prior to the start of the games, both teams will be recognizing their seniors who will be graduating this spring. First pitch is set for 1pm.
