Orchard Park, NY - The Hilbert College baseball team kicked off AMCC play as they hosted La Roche for a doubleheader this afternoon. The Hawks dropped game one 13-0 and fell in game two 16-2.
Game One
The Redhawks started off game one with an Austin Hoffman leadoff double, which helped them scratch across the first run of the game to go up 1-0 early. Hilbert would begin the bottom half of the frame with a pair of singles and a double steal to threaten early, but starter Jake Seymour would strand the runners by striking out a pair and getting a groundout to come out unscathed.Â
After a scoreless second, La Roche would tack on 12 runs (nine unearned) over the next two innings to take a commanding 13-0 lead. From there, the Hawks offense struggled to generate many scoring chances, resulting in a 13-0 final.
Aydan Rolph (3-1) took his first loss of the season after allowing five runs (three earned) over three innings of work and added two strikeouts. The freshman duo of
Brendan Walsh and
Evan Benkleman had strong outings in relief, combining for 3.1 shutout innings of work.
La Roche starter Jake Seymour notched his first win of the season after tossing six shutout innings, striking out seven.
Game Two
La Roche had another fast start in game two, tallying a pair of runs in the top of the first off of three hits including a Dylan Urban RBI double. They'd add another in the second inning off an error to go up 3-0.Â
After being set down in order over the first two frames, the Hilbert sticks would begin to show life.
Jared Welnowski and Benjamin Ratajcak hit back to back one out singles and
Frank McCabe followed with a walk to load the bases for
Misael Guzman Caez. Guzman Caez answered with an RBI single up the middle.
James DiSanti then walked and McCabe later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Hawks deficit to 3-2.Â
The Redhawks would pull away over the final six innings, outscoring Hilbert 13-0 to cruise to a 16-2 win.
Zachary Crane took the loss on the mound for Hilbert after 1.1 innings of work. The Hawks bullpen would blank the Redhawks in four of the final seven innings, but it wasn't enough to hold of the La Roche offensive attack.
The Hawks hit the road tomorrow as they head to Pitt-Greensburg for another AMCC doubleheader on Saturday, April 10th. First pitch is set for 1pm.
