Oberlin, OH - The Hilbert College baseball team hit the road to take on Oberlin College for the final twinbill prior to the start of AMCC play. Oberlin took game one 14-5, but the resilient Hawks bounced back with a complete performance to defeat the Yeomen 10-0 in game two.
Game One
The Hawks started the day with fireworks on offense. Leadoff man
Frank McCabe got the offense started with a single to right center and stole second, before a pair of hit by pitches loaded the bases. From there,
Matt Kellner walked and
Brandon Job hit a ground ball to the right side to plate a pair.
Colton Davis followed with an RBI groundout as well to put the Hawks ahead 3-0 early.Â
Starter
Jordan Brown answered with a shutdown inning in the bottom half of the first, stranding a pair of Yeomen baserunners to maintain the Hawks lead. Oberlin's bats would awaken soon after, tallying 14 runs over the next three innings to go up 14-4.Â
Freshman
Nicholas Wilson would take the mound for the final two frames and was able to quiet the Oberlin sticks, tossing two shutout innings in relief, adding a pair of strikeouts.Â
Brown took the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs (three earned) over 2.2 innings pitched.
Frank McCabe continued his strong play at the plate, as he notched a pair of hits and runs scored.
Game Two
Starting pitcher
Aydan Rolph set the tone early for the royal and white in what had the makings of a pitchers duel early on. The Hawks offense was blanked over the first two frames, but Rolph answered with a pair of shutout frames as well to keep the score tied at 0-0 after two innings played.Â
In the top of the third, the Hilbert offense erupted with five runs to take a commanding lead. The freshman duo of
Emmanuel McClain and
Colton Davis got things started with a pair of singles to lead off the frame. Two batters later,
Jonathan Wilson was intentionally walked to load the bases for
James DiSanti whom sent a line drive deep into left centerfield for a 3-RBI double.
Matt Kellner would follow with an RBI double of his own to plate DiSanti. Then,
Brandon Job sent a ball into left field to score Kellner, putting the Hawks up 5-0 through three innings of play.
After a shutdown inning by Rolph, the Hawks offense would tack on three more runs by way of a 2-RBI single from Kellner and an RBI single from
Anthony DiNizo to put the Hawks up 8-0 after four frames.
Rolph would put up another zero to finish off his day with five innings of shutout ball, adding two strikeouts without surrendering a single walk. The Hawks would scratch across two more runs while
Colin Windle went to work, tossing two shutout innings out of the pen to give the Hawks their first team shutout since April 28th, 2018 against D'Youville. Meanwhile, Rolph picked up his AMCC-leading 3rd win of the season.
The game ended with four Hawks tallying multi-hit games, including
James DiSanti,
Matt Kellner,
Brandon Job and
Colton Davis.
Hilbert (3-5) retakes the field Wednesday, April 7th at 1pm as they travel to crosstown rival Medaille College to open up AMCC play.
