GOWANDA, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team turned around on less than 24 hours rest after sweeping rival Medaille yesterday to host Mount Aloysius in a doubleheader at Gowanda High School this afternoon. The Hawks dropped game one 11-0 and fell short in game two 13-7.
GAME ONE
The first game of the doubleheader had the makings of a pitchers duel early. Starters
Zachary Crane and Dylan Coyle each blanked the opposition over the first two innings of play.
In the top of the third, the wheels fell off a bit for the Hawks. The Mounties took advantage of a pair of errors on the infield to ignite the offense, leading to six hits in the inning and six runs to take an early 6-0 lead.
The early lead allowed Mountie starter Dylan Coyle to work in rhythm as he kept the Hilbert hitters off balance throughout, resulting in a complete game shutout to improve his record on the season to 4-1.
Hilbert starter
Zachary Crane took the loss on the mound in his 23rd start of his career, moving him into sole possession of second on the All-Time program starts list.
Seven different Hawks record hits in the contest, with
Misael Guzman Caez recording the only extra base hit when he laced a 2-out double to left center in the third inning.
GAME TWO
The Hawks showed fight early in game two behind starter
Evan Benkleman. After the Mounties plated an unearned run in the top of the first, Benkleman worked with an up tempo approach to keep the Aloysius sticks off balance, resulting in a pair of zeros over the next two frames.
After being blanked through two innings, the Hawks offense came to life in the bottom of the third.
Matt Kellner and
James DiSanti both got hit by a pitch with one out, bringing up
Brandon Job. Job send a hard hit ball into right field to drive in Kellner for the Hawks first run of the day. Later in the inning, DiSanti scored on a
Colton Davis sac fly to left to put the Hawks up 2-1 through three innings of play.
The Mounties responded with 11 unanswered runs (six earned) over the next four innings by taking advantage of free passes and errors to take a commanding 12-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Hawks fought hard late, plating five runs over the final three frames, including a 2-run home run from
Brandon Job in the seventh, but the comback-bid fell short as the Mounties took game two 13-7.
Freshman
Evan Benkleman took the loss on the mound after scattering six hits over 4.2 innings of work.
Daniel Munn had a strong showing in relief, tossing 2.2 innings without allowing an earned run.
The Hawks had four players finish with two hit games including
Frank McCabe,
Brandon Job,
Benjamin Ratajczak and
Colton Davis. McCabe also added two stolen bases to add to his AMCC league-leading total of 15 now on the season.
Hilbert (7-11, 4-6) is back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Penn State Behrend at Gowanda High School for senior day. First pitch is set for 1pm. The five seniors who will be walking this May will be honored prior to the first pitch.
