Baseball Sweeps Crosstown Rival Medaille

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team traveled to crosstown rival Medaille College on Sunday afternoon for a pair of AMCC matchups. The Hawks took game one 8-1 and clawed their way to a 6-5 victory in game two, extending their win streak over the Mavericks to six games dating back to 2018.

GAME ONE

It was a pitchers duel early in game one between Hawks starter Misael Guzman Caez and Mavericks starter Derek Holtz. Each starter blanked the opposition over the first three frames.

Hilbert was able to break the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth off three straight two out singles by Colton Davis, Benjamin Ratajczak and Brandon Job to put the Hawks up 1-0.

After another scoreless frame from Guzman Caez, the Hawks offense went back to work. Frank McCabe and Misael Guzman Caez got on with one out and worked their way around to score off of strong base running, including three stolen bases in the inning, to put the royal and white up 3-0.

That is all the Hawks would need as Guzman Caez would cruise the rest of the way and gain some insurance runs late to earn the complete game win, while fanning eight. Benjamin Ratajczak, Brandon Job and Jared Welnowski were strong contributors on offense, accounting for a pair of hits each.

GAME TWO

The Hawks started much quicker on offense in game two, building a 4-0 lead through the first three innings for starter Zackory Panfil off of some Maverick miscues.

The Mavs would fight back in the bottom of the third as Patrick Whelan belted a grand slam to tie it up at four. Medaille would add another in the inning to take the lead 5-4 after three innings of play.

After a scoreless fourth inning from both sides, the Hilbert sticks got going again. A trio of Hawks would single in the inning starting with Colton Davis, and followed by Benjamin Ratajczak and Matt Kellner to plate a pair of runs and retake the lead.

Once the Hawks took the lead 6-5, they turned to freshman Brendan Walsh to slam the door shut and he answered the bill, tossing six shutout innings and adding eight strikeouts to pickup his first career college win. Medaille's Zach Archibald would take the loss on the mound after giving up just two runs over 6.2 innings of work.

The Hawks (7-9, 4-4) have a quick turnaround as they head to Gowanda, NY tomorrow to host second-seeded Mount Aloysius College in a twinbill starting at 1pm.
