Hawks Win Walk-Off Thriller Over Pitt-Bradford

GOWANDA, N.Y. - The Hilbert College baseball team played a hard fought AMCC doubleheader this afternoon against Pitt-Bradford falling in game one 7-5 before taking game two 4-3 in extras by way of a walk-off.

Game One

The Panthers got off to a quick start by way of four hit by pitches and a pair of extra base hits to get off to an early 4-1 lead through two innings.

Freshman Brendan Walsh came in from the pen in the third and kept the Panthers offense off balance resulting in a pair of shutout innings to give the Hawks offense a chance to claw back. Benjamin Ratajczak got the offense going with a double to left field to kickoff the bottom of the third inning. He later scored on a Misael Guzman Caez single. Guzman Caez then stole second base and was brought home by an RBI single to left by James DiSanti to put the Hawks down just one run after three.

Pitt-Bradford would break the game open in the fifth with a three run inning off three walks, a hit and some productive outs to go up 7-3. From there, starter Kyler Majka and reliever Ben Mulhall would slam the door shut to take a game one win.

Aydan Rolph (3-2) took the loss on the mound after giving up four runs (three earned) over two innings of work.

Game Two

The night cap was a classic pitchers duel with neither starter willing to give in. Zachary Crane kept the Panthers offense off balance, while Alex Miles did the same for Pitt-Bradford. Both starters put up five shutout frames through six innings of play. It was a big third inning that had the Hawks leading 3-2.

In the bottom of the third, Frank McCabe led off with an infield single and Misael Guzman Caez followed with a walk. After each of them swiped a bag, James DiSanti smacked a double to deep left center to plate two. DiSanti later scored off an RBI double from Colton Davis to put the Hawks up.

Once given the lead, Crane cruised through the next three innings without allowing a single hit. The Panthers would score an unearned run in the seventh to tie it up at three a piece. Then the Hawks turned to reliever Zackory Panfil who answered with three shutout innings to put the Hawks in a position in the bottom of the 10th to win it.

In the bottom of the 10th, Frank McCabe and Misael Guzman Caez led off with back to back singles. Pinch hitter Anthony DiNizo would sac bunt them over. Three batters later, with two out, Frank McCabe scored on a wild pitch to lift the Hawks to a walk-off AMCC victory.

Zachary Crane and Zackory Panfil combined to throw 10 innings of four hit ball without allowing an earned run and added nine strikeouts combined. Panfil picked up the win on the mound in relief, while Crane got the no-decision.

Hilbert (5-9, 2-4) hits the road Friday to take on crosstown rival Medaille College in an AMCC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1pm.
