Gowanda, N.Y. - The Hawks split today's doubleheader home opener with Hiram by taking game one 12-7, before falling in game two 18-3.
Game One
The Terriers scratched across the first run of the day in the first off of an error. The score would remain 1-0 through the first two and a half innings of play before the Hawks offense got rolling. In the top of the third inning, the Hawks took advantage of a couple defensive miscues by Hiram by way of a
James DiSanti 2-RBI single, followed by an RBI single from
Misael Guzman Caez and another run driven in off an error to go up 4-1 after three innings of play.Â
Both pitchers would go 1-2-3 in each of their next frames. Then the Hiram offense answered with a big four run inning, sparked by a Chaisson Marrs leadoff home run to ignite a 4-run fifth inning, putting the Terriers up 5-4. The Hawks answered right back in the bottom of the frame when outfielder
Misael Guzman Caez launched a 3-run home run over centerfield to put the Hawks back in the lead. Hilbert would tack two more on in the inning to go up 9-5 after five.
Reliever,
Aydan Rolph blanked the Terriers in the sixth. The Hawks offense continued to scratch across runs with three more in the sixth.
Jonathan Wilson led off the inning belting a solo shot over the left field wall and
Brandon Job capped off the scoring with a double to deep center to put the Hawks up 12-5.
Jordan Brown came in the seventh to cap off the Hawks 12-7 win.
Josh McTigue took a no-decision in his start, tossing 4+ innings.
Aydan Rolph picked up his second win of the season after tossing two innings in relief, allowing just a single earned run and added four strikeouts.
Game Two
Hilbert began game two with some shaky play on defense, resulting in four unearned runs over the first two frames. The Hawks offense responded in the bottom of the second.
Brandon Job and
Shawn Romanowski had back to back two-out singles to load the bases.
Frank McCabe took full advantage, sending a double to left center, plating all three base runners narrowing the deficit to 4-3.Â
Starter
Zachary Crane answered with a big shutdown inning in the third. However, the Terriers offense was able to take advantage of a couple of errors in the fourth to spark an 8-run inning, putting them up 12-3. From there, they would cruise to an 18-3 victory.
Zachary Crane took the loss on the mound going 3.1 innings, allowing 8 runs (1 earned) on six hits.
Zackory Panfil had a strong relief appearance in the pen, tossing 1.1 innings of shutout ball. Jacob Kocuba was credited with the win for the Terriers.
Hilbert (2-4) is back in action Friday as they travel to Oberlin College for a 2pm doubleheader.
