Aurora, N.Y. - The Hawks dropped a pair of games to Wells College on Sunday afternoon by scores of 8-4 and 4-1.
Game One
Both starting pitchers came out of the gate strong in game one, blanking the opposition with three up, three down frames. Hilbert got the scoring started in the top of the second when
Misael Guzman Caez blasted a 2-run home run to right field to put the Hawks up 2-0 early. Wells responded in the bottom of the second with five runs on three hits and one error to take a 5-2 lead after two.
The Hilbert offense answered right back in the top of the third to shrink the deficit to one.
Frank McCabe led off the inning with a single, then stole second base.
Matt Kellner followed with an RBI double.
James DiSanti and
Jonathan Wilson followed with singles of their own to plate Kellner, making it a 5-4 game.
In the bottom of the third, Wells tacked on three more runs on four hits to take a commanding 8-4 lead. The Hawks turned to their bullpen in the fourth to keep the game within reach and they answered the calling. The trio of
Zachary Crane,
Zackory Panfil and
Michael Contini combined to throw three shutout innings in relief, adding three strikeouts. Wells starting pitcher Zach Kemp was equally as impressive as he was able to blank the Hawks over the final four frames to go the distance and secure the 8-4 win.
Jonathan Wilson led the offense with three hits, while
Misael Guzman Caez took his first loss of the season after going three innings on the mound.
Game Two
Hilbert went down in order to leadoff the second game. However, starter
Josh McTigue was able to blank the Express in the bottom half to keep the game scoreless after one. Wells opened up the scoring an inning later, taking advantage of three walks in the inning to plate two.
From there, it was a pitchers dual as both starters blanked the offenses over the next couple of innings, before Hilbert turned to reliever
Aydan Rolph in the fifth inning after a leadoff double by Wells. The Express singled to plate their third run of the game and later scored again off an infield error to go up 4-1. That proved to be too much to overcome as starter Jared Strait went six innings strong and Austin Jordan threw a scoreless seventh to take down the Hawks 4-1.
Freshman
Colton Davis paved the way on offense for the Hawks going 2 for 2 with a double and a walk.
Josh McTigue took the loss on the mound after 4+ innings of work, allowing just two earned runs.
Aydan Rolph tossed a pair of innings in relief without allowing an earned run.
Hilbert (1-3) is back in action next weekend as they travel to SUNY Fredonia to play a doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
