Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Kara Rehbaum

Hawks Clipped by Soaring Eagles

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hawks men's basketball team had things go in their favor for the first 32 minutes of the game tonight but they didn't defend the ball off the bounce and fell to Elmira College, 83-69.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Elmira 83   I  Hilbert 69
  • Location: Hafner Recreation Center  I Hamburg, NY
  • Records:  Soaring Eagles 1-4  I  Hawks 3-3
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Shawn Gashi led the Hawks with 16 points and Zach Miller came off the bench with a big lift, hitting 3-for-4 from the arc and 100-percent at the foul line to added 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert finally took control of the game 15-minutes into the first half.  The Soaring Eagles zone defense slowed the Hawks attack, but they were still able to connect from deep and find the open lanes in the paint.
  • Edward Perez scored a short jumper in front of the rim, and then Shaheem Ellis connected from deep just before Jon Evans hit in the paint which built the 13-point margin at 3:49.  Perez finished a Noah Fox feed for a fastbreak lay-up and established the Hawks largest lead (42-29) with 37-seconds left in the opening period.
  • Hilbert maintained their double-figure lead through the first ten minutes of play into the second half.
  • Elmira strung together three 3-pointers in a row, plus a pair of buckets in the paint to make it a one-point game with 8:56 to go.
  • Hilbert went 1-for-2 on their next possession, while the Soaring Eagles took their first lead in the second half off an old fashioned three-point play.
  • The Hawks regained the lead once more then struggled to finish on the offensive end of the floor.  Elmira switched gears and drove to the hoop one-on-one the rest of the way for the 14-point win.

GAME NOTES

  • Shaheem Ellis finished with a team-high two steals and nine points, all off 3's and Edward Perez added seven points and seven rebounds.
  • The Hawks went from a 43.3-percent performance from the field in the first half to a 23.6-percent rate in the final half.  They went to the foul line 13 times early (made 11) but slowed their attack in the second half with only four trips to the line (5-for-8).
  • Elmira flipped the script on the Hawks in the second half.  After they shot only 34.8-percent from the floor, their dribble-drive to the rim resulted in a 76.0-percent performance from the field in the final 20 minutes.  They outscored the Hawks 20-4 in the paint after intermission.
