Men's Basketball Suffers Loss to Saxons

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball program suffered a season-opening 64-59 loss to Alfred University last night in the Hafner Recreation Center.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert started the game strong, hitting their first 3-point shot 55-seconds after the tip.
  • The Hawks knotted the game at 12-12 off another hit from downtown and worked through three more tied-score situations before they closed the half on a 10-6 run taking a 33-29 lead into the break.
  • Shawn Gashi led all scorers with 12 points while Eric Jackson shared the ball for four assists as the Hawks hit 12-of-24 field goal attempts and 3-of-6 from deep.
  • Hilbert matched their game-high six-point lead early in the second half and then went cold from floor.
  • AU went on a 12-1 run, took their first lead in 19-minutes of action, and held a 41-37 lead by 15:19 in the second half.
  • The Hawks went back on top (45-41) off back-to-back 3's by Shaheem Ellis and held that lead until 9:25 when Alfred swung the score back in their favor.
  • Hilbert forced a 52-52 score, yet didn't have offensive answers to the Saxon's push down the stretch.
  • The Hawks went 2-for-13 from the floor the final 7 minutes of the game before Eric Jackson drained a 3-pointer before the buzzer setting a five-point margin of defeat.
GAME NOTES
  • Alfred held a 15-6 advantage in points off turnovers and 38-22 lead in points in the paint.
  • Gashi led the Hawks with 12 points, hitting 2-of-5 from downtown. Elijah Powell collected 13 points, and four rebounds as Shaheem Ellis added 11 points off the bench along with two steals while Eric Jackson was credited with five assists, and two steals (6p).
  • The Hawks finished the game hitting 37.7 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and made 7-of-10 shots from the foul line while grabbing 38 rebounds.
  • Alfred hit 43.3 percent from the floor, 29.4 percent from beyond the arc and made 7-of-12 from the charity stripe and held a one rebound advantage, finishing with 39 boards.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Hilbert is preparing to host the program's 11th annual Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament which supports the Buffalo City Mission and their Thanksgiving Food Drive.
  • The Hawks will welcome SUNY Canton in a 6:00 pm opening game Friday, November 12 while John Carroll and Keuka College will battle in the 8:00 pm night cap.  The 1:00 pm consolation game and 3:00 pm championship game will be played on Saturday, November 13. 
  • Daily admission is $6.00 at the door but those that bring a canned foot item for the Buffalo City Mission will be charged a $5.00 entry fee.
