Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Hilbert College baseball team fell to the Moravian Greyhounds under the lights by a final of 14-4.
The Hawks were initially scheduled to play a doubleheader under the lights last night, but that was cut short as they had to call it after game one due to inclement weather.
Hilbert's sticks cooled off in this contest, as they couldn't scratch a run across until the fifth inning. However, starting pitcher
Colin Windle kept them close, allowing just two runs (one earned run) over the first three frames to keep the Hawks close heading into the fourth.
The Greyhounds were able to knock Windle out of the game in the fourth after they opened the inning threatening with a hit by pitch followed by a single and sac bunt to put runners in scoring position with just one out, ultimately resulting in a pair of runs to put Moravian up 4-0 after four innings of play.
The Hawks were able to scratch a run across in the fifth by way of a bases loaded walk issued to
Brian Hutchinson, but the Greyhounds limited the damage getting
Ian Moran to ground out to end the inning.
Reliever
Daniel Munn blanked Moravian in the fifth, opening the door for the Hilbert offense to crawl back, and that's exactly what they did. With two outs and
Noah Welch standing on first,
Austin O'Shei singled on a groundball to left to bring up
Angelo DiNizo. The freshman outfielder smoked a double to deep left to score both Hawks base runners and bring the royal and white within a lone run of tying it up.
The late game rally wasn't enough though as Moravian plated 10 in the bottom of the sixth to cruise to a 14-4 win.
Freshman
Colin Windle took the loss on the mound after going 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Junior
Daniel Munn tossed 1.2 hitless innings in relief and added a pair of strikeouts as well.
Senior
Austin O'Shei paced the offense with two hits and a stolen base, while freshman
Angelo DiNizo provided the loan extra base hit with a sixth inning two RBI double.
Hilbert (4-3) is back at it tomorrow, as they take on Eastern Nazerene in a doubleheader beginning at 11am.
