Game Recap: Baseball | | Drew Fittry

Wilson And Welnowski Homer On Opening Day

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Hilbert College baseball team opened up their 2020 campaign today with a doubleheader against the College of Staten Island. After falling 23-10 in game one, the Hawks took the Dolphins to the brink of defeat, before ultimately falling in extra-innings by a final score of 13-9. Jonathan Wilson powered the offense going 4 for 7 with two doubles, a home run, three runs batted in and three runs scored.

GAME ONE

Staten Island got off to a quick start, taking an early 12-0 lead after the first inning.

Hilbert answered in the top of the second with three runs off two hits. After Brandon Job and Noah Welch reached base to start the inning, Nate Sanderson hit an infield single to load the bases. Austin O'Shei followed with a walk to score the Hawks first run of the season. Ian Moran followed with a sac fly immediately after, and Griffith DeMayo hit an RBI single to cap off the scoring in the second.

With the Hawks trailing entering the fourth inning, coach Drew Fittry turned to senior right-hander Henry Bowers to shut down the Dolphins attack. Bowers proceeded to toss two innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out three to give the Hawks offense a chance to cut into the 13-3 deficit.

While Bowers kept the Dolphins hitters off balance, Hilbert's offense added five runs over the next three innings, which included a Jonathan Wilson home run in the fourth inning, to get the Hawks within five at 13-8 heading into the bottom of the 6, but it wasn't quite enough as Staten Island cruised to the opening day victory.

Starting pitcher Daniel Munn took the loss on the mound after 3.0 innings pitched.

Eleven different Hawks tallied a hit in the contest, with Jonathan Wilson hitting a round-tripper. Sophomore Matt Kellner added a triple in his Hawks debut.

GAME TWO

Hilbert turned to starting pitcher Colin Windle to start game two on the bump. Windle answered the call tossing four innings, allowing just three runs while adding three strikeouts in his collegiate debut.

The Hawks continued their strong start to the season on offense, scoring the games' first three runs.

Griffith DeMayo opened the scoring in game two with an RBI triple to centerfield to score Austin O'Shei in the first inning. Then in the second, the Hawks used a pair of RBI triples by Matt Kellner and Austin O'Shei to tack on two more runs, resulting in a 3-0 Hilbert lead.

Staten Island answered back with a 3-run homer to tie the game up at 3-3 after three innings played.

Hilbert was able to tack on a run in each of the next two innings to take a 5-3 lead thanks in part to a Jared Welnowski fourth-inning solo home run before Staten Island tacked on six straight runs to go up 9-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Hawks showed grit and determination coming all the way back in the final frame to tie it up at 9-9 after hits by Griffith DeMayo, Jonathan Wilson, Brandon Job and James DiSanti to send the game to extras, but it wasn't enough as the Dolphins pulled away in the eighth inning to secure the win.

Hilbert (0-2) is back at it tomorrow as they take on the College of Saint Elizabeth in an afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4:30pm.
