GREENSBURG, Pa. After battling to a 36-36 half time score, the Hilbert College men's basketball team was unable to shut the Bobcats down from beyond the arc as the Hawks fell 70-65 to Pitt-Greensburg (1-1) in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play.
The Hawks scored nine more points off turnovers, finished eight more second-chance points and tallied eight more fast break points than Greensburg, but the Bobcats shot 50% from downtown (8-of-16) to pull out their first AMCC win.
Hilbert (0-2 AMCC) held a 41-33 advantage on the glass while grabbing 15 offensive rebounds.  The Hawks were credited with more steals and fewer turnovers, but Hilbert's 36.7% field goal shooting, which included no makes from beyond the arc, did them in.
Hunter Martineau was the solo Hilbert player to hit double digits, reaching for 15 points (6-for-12 from the floor). He also chipped in five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Dre' Turnipseed led the Hawks on the boards, pulling down four offensive and nine total while scoring seven points, hitting 3-of-4 at the foul line.
Joseph Braniecki (2 blocks),
Masia Phillips and
Alex Karamanos all finished with eight points.
Greensburg jumped out early building a nine-point lead after hitting three consecutive 3-point shots at the start of the game.
Turnipseed started a 9-0 run at 9:08 and Phillips lifted Hilbert to their first lead at 5:36 with two makes at the charity stripe.
Both teams scored over the next four possessions flipping the lead back and forth for two minutes until Phillips hit back-to-back jumper giving the Hawks a 31-28 lead. The Bobcats regained the lead (36-34) at 0:55 but Phillips knocked down pair at the foul line and sent both teams to intermission knotted at 36-all.
Martineau hit both free throws in the opening minute of the second stanza but three minutes later the Bobcats knocked down a deep shot which built a six point separation (46-40) at 15:55.
Hilbert battled back and five times forced a tie score with their last effort at 1:15 (64-64).
Greensburg manufactured six points from the foul line (6-for-6) while Hilbert went 1-for 3 in the final minute of action.
The Hawks return to the Hafner Recreation Center Monday, December 3 for a non-conference game against Houghton College at 7pm.
