Hawks Pick-up 93-71 Win Over Highlanders

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team got back on the winning track tonight inside the friendly confines of the Hafner Recreation Center.

The Hawks (4-4) pumped in 50 second-half points to claim a 93-71 non-conference victory over Houghton College (0-6).

Three players reached double digits for the White and Royal led by Masia Phillips 21 points.  The junior guard hit eight of 12 shots from the floor and dished four assists while grabbing five rebounds.

Both teams finished the game shooting 57% from the floor which left limited rebounds available for the taking.

Hilbert controlled the glass, garnering 35 boards while clearing the offensive end for 15 and held Houghton to just 22 rebounds.   Dre' Turnipseed led the Hawks with five offensive rebounds (8 total) while adding nine points (one 3-pointer).

Hilbert forced the Highlanders into 14 turnovers but did not have an answer for Dylan Lambert (13-19 for 33 points) or Jordan Holmes (8-15 for 20 points and 6 assists).

Joseph Braniecki finished the night with a solid performance in the paint shooting 7-for-10 (15 points) as did Nicholas Parucki who added nine points off a 4-for-6 shooting (one 3-pointer).

Sophomore Ryan Hogan notched 11 points knocking down three 3-pointers in 18 minutes while Hunter Martineau quarterbacked the team to victory behind 11 assists, two steals and eight points.   Alex Karamanos added eight points as a starter hitting all three field goal attempts and Jacob Braniecki sank 2-of-3 shots from the floor and foul line to post six points tonight.

Houghton took an early lead in the first half only to have Hilbert match the Highlanders efforts and force an 11 tie at 13:37.

The Highlanders built their largest lead of four points twice before intermission, but the Hawks held strong and rolled to half time with a 43-42 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

After two solid minutes of scoreless action at the start of the second half, Houghton jumped ahead 44-43 for the final time of the night.  The Hawks went on an 8-0 run and started to put the game away with just over 16 minutes left in the game.

Jacob Braniecki's hit in the lane was followed by older brother Joe's jumper which lifted the Hawks into their first double figure lead (64-53) at 11:27.  Houghton never cut the difference under 10 points the rest of the night.

Reid Miano's turn-around jumper gave Hilbert their largest lead (23 points) with 47-seconds left in the game.

The Hawks return to AMCC action in two days when they host Penn State Behrend on December 5 at 8pm.
