BUFFALO, N.Y. – Medaille College used a long-distance big second-half scoring spurt to pull away from the Hilbert College men's basketball team to pick up a 70-61 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory tonight in the Sullivan Center.
Jerame Owens scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while leading his team with four assists.
Trevor Stark added 10 points as did
Kirkland Ottey who connected on all three shots from the field and hit three-of-four at the charity stripe.
Medaille had four players reach double figures led by Louie Oliveri's 17 points. No Maverick worked the boards like Hilbert's
Jerame Owens as Hilbert out-rebounded the hosts 43-42 but each team tallied 14 offensive boards.
Medaille held a slight advantage over Hilbert from the field (39.7% v 37.9%) and made half the three-point shots they attempted (7-14).
Tonight was the first time this season the Hawks shot less than 20% from the 3-point line; Hilbert has been a strong long-distance shooting team averaging 7-made buckets beyond the arc.
The Royal and White finished with a season-low seven assists after averaging 16.5 assists per game prior to tonight's game.
Medaille scored 25 points off Hilbert's 18 turnovers while the Hawks could only muster 12 points via the Maverick's 14 give-aways.
After trading baskets to open the game, Medaille when on a 9-0 run before
Kirkland Ottey broke the ice at the foul line. After a Medaille bucket,
Trevor Stark took a Jerame Owen's pass to the rim followed by an Ottey 3-ball and then two successful free throws which set the spread to three points (14-17) at 10:40.
Ottey and
Xavier Major closed the gap and three buckets in a row by
Jerame Owens gave the Hawks the lead. Medaille knocked down five unanswered points before the break for the 30-28 half time score.
The Mavs extended their lead to five points on a three-point play before Owens went on a roll.
Sean Weisansal hit once,
Trevor Stark twice and then Owens three times plus a freebie at the line to force a tie (40-40) at 14:22.
Joran Kumro gave Hilbert their last lead in the game (45-43) when he knocked down his 3-pointer at 11:28. Hilbert went cold down the stretch and scored three baskets the rest of the half.
Xavier Major and
Sean Weisansal each netted eight points while
Jordan Kumro added five.
Hilbert returns to Hamburg this weekend and will host Mount Aloysius College January 24 at 3pm.

Jerame Owens is only two points from scoring his 1,000 point in just his junior year at Hilbert.
This Saturday, the men's basketball program will be joining other NABC coaches who will wear 'suits and sneakers' during their games to promote awareness and encourage funding for the American Cancer Society. There will be a collection bucket located at the Hafner gym entrance available for loose change or paper-bill donations.
