HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team got back on the fast track, literally, today.
The Hawks raced to a 89-70 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Mount Aloysius College.
With the win, Hilbert (12-5) broke their three-game losing skid and improved to 7-4 with a firm hold onto 5th place. The Mounties dropped to 4-7 and 6-12 overall.
With the first basket of the game, junior
Jerame Owens became the 12th men's basketball player to join the elite 1,000 point club. Owens converted a nice dump-down pass from
Sean Weisansal and layed it home at 19:46 on the clock. From here on out, the pressure is off.
Owens led five Hawks who notched double figure points. He tallied 20 on 9-of-11 shots and collected a team-high eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks.
Sean Weisansal was also hot from the field as he converted 6-of-8 shots and all three foul shots for 16 points.
Trevor Stark found his groove again dishing the ball to the shooters as he posted his second double-digit assist game quarterbacking to 10 in 35 minutes. Stark also led on defense with three blocks and four steals and added 13 points.
Ryan Bradt had another solid game in the paint. He ran for 29 minutes and made 50% of his 10 attempts and was a perfect 5-of-5 at the foul line to string together 15 points and seven rebounds.
Kirkland Ottey continues to step-up and keep-it all together for the Hawks. Ottey shot 75% from the floor and foul line to post 11 points.
The Mounties worked for three double-digit scorers led by Tanner Thomas' 20 points. He also earned game-high rebounding honors with 15, eight on the offensive end.
Hilbert started the game on fire and stayed hot the second half. The Hawks held an upper hand in shooting percentage (50%-44%) and knocked down five shots beyond the three-point line. Each team sank 20 free throws.
Mount Aloysius grabbed seven more rebounds and beat the Hawks on the offensive glass (16-10).
A striking difference statistically was in team play. Hilbert moved the ball and got everyone involved. The hosts finished with 20 assists vs. Mount Aloysius' seven.
After
Jerame Owens scored the first two points, the Hawks never trailed in the game. They built a 10-point lead when Owens dunked the ball at 16:22. The Mounties cut the score to single digits a few times as the half progressed, but weren't able to get any closer than six points (7:02 – 29-23).
The pace in the second half was frantic at times. Hilbert rushed their offense and got out of synch a few possessions in a row. The Mounties appeared to be on the come-back trail when Thomas scored a layup at 15:18 (52-43). But neither team scored for three more minutes until Brady sank one freebie which brought the lead back to 10. The pace slowed and Hilbert gained control of their defense again and built a 19-point lead when the final horn sounded.
Hilbert returns to action this Wednesday when they host D'Youville College in an 8pm tip. The men's basketball program will briefly honor their two 1,000 point scorers prior to tip-off. Arrive early and take photos.
